Wow, Sweeney is on a tear. In his last 3 series he is 9 for 25 with 2 HR and 10 RBI. Also with 5 BB and only 3 K.

Has Russell been struggling in Birmingham? That pitching line tonight is not impressive.
On a brighter note, Sweeney is playing well enough to merit a recall if KW trades some of the veterans who are blocking him. |

Masset isn't a surprise...hopefully he pitches well and becomes good trade bait. |

The Russell switch is long overdue. Hope he catches fire and maybe we see him in September.

Has he projected to be a reliever?

I hope he pitches well enough to give KW lots of options for the 5th starter spot going into the 2008 season. (I hope that fifth starter vacancy is caused by trading Contreras rather than Garland, Vazquez or Danks.)

That's a good question, when he came out of college I don't think anyone knew exactly what his role would be. With his size and delivery he could be a workhorse starter, but due to his lack of offspeed stuff the hitters catch on and start hitting him. Adam's slider is entirely too flat with little movement and his curve is too inconsistent.
When you throw 97/98 there's got to be some role that you can fill. |

And yet... Andrew Sisco.

Was Sisco really throwing that hard this year. I remember a lot of 93/94 in the dirt. Russell has better control than Sisco, I can say that easily (not that it's much of an accomplishment).

You're right. Sisco is probably down to 93-94, I was trying to be funny. I have high hopes for Russell in the pen.
On a related note, could Egbert be a kind of young Keith Foulke 6th and 7th inning man or do you think he'll be given a fair shot to beat out Gio, Floyd, Broadway, and McCulloch for a starting job? |

Egbert has taken a huge step forward this year (which is what he needed to do - cant be 24 in high A after pitching 3 years in college). But he showed he CAN pitch in AA and, more importantly, pretty much dominate. His strikeouts are up to nearly one an inning - with the walks at 2.25 - Very excited about him. I think he can definitely win a starting job in spring training, especially if they don't want to rush Gio. But Gio is going to be forced to get promoted soon. I bet he dominates starting now until the end of the year - and comes out blazing in spring training. Just a hunch.
