Default Are there any relievers available?

I did a quick check of the middle relievers and found out that it wasnīt quite as easy to come up with one as I would have thought....and there are no sure things. Madson, who has been mentioned with the ĻfakeĻ Contreras deal, is obviously one of the best.

Best options
Scott Linebrink
Gary Majewski (yeah, that short geeky guy with the glasses)
Luis Ayala
JJ Putz (just having him on your team, you deserve to lose, lol)
Mike DeJean
Todd Williams
Rheal Cormier

Wow, none of those names exactly strike fear into your heart. Actually, the other kid, along with Madson, that I like is Jason Frasor from Toronto, but he would come at a hefty price as well.

Heck, Kelly Wunsch and Jamie Walker were in the Top 40 in MLB hold statistics.

My back-up list is Mike Gonzalez from PIT, Al Reyes (donīt think we could get him), Dan Wheeler and Jay Witasick.

Maybe Marte and Vizcaino do not look so bad, after all.

Relievers still available right before spring training starts have a lot in common with women still available in a bar right before closing time.

Are there relievers available? Sure
Are there good relievers available? Nope

We've reached a point in the offseason where the best available option is still only the 200th best option overall.

Relievers are a volitile commodity, maybe the sox will get lucky with somebody.

What about Jason Christiansen? Has he been signed yet? I always thought he would make a good minor league sign and possible 12th pitcher. He's a LHP too.

Isn't Brian Meadows still a free agent? I believe he's a LHP.

I like Scott Linebrink over our last-resort RHP, whoever that may be.

Still available and will be available for awhile. He's really only had one really good season in the last seven years and that was 2001. Doesn't have much left in the tank and I think some of the lefties the sox have already brought in are better, even as AAA filler.

The Free Agent list is pretty worthless right now and most teams right now aren't interested in trading quality relievers. mostly because there aren't many available.

What we have is what we are going to have.

How about signing a mediocre starter and throwing him in the pen?

I'd love to see Gary Majewski in black and silver. Ranked 5th in the NL in holds last year I believe. WHIP and BAA were nothing remarkable but he got a lot of big, big outs for the Gnats last season.

Reds agreed to terms with RHP Rick White, who had been with the Pirates, on a one-year, $600,000 contract.
Everyone is a candidate to close in Cincinnati right now, but White's a pretty awful choice. While he had a 3.72 ERA last season, his WHIP stood at 1.59. He finished 2004 with a 5.29 ERA for the Indians. The Reds should just hope he's an adequate middle reliever.

Who did you have in mind? There really aren't any lefty starters left on the FA list. John Halama probably being the best available. Maybe try to turn Kirk Rueter into a LOOGY and see what happens.

From the right side we would be talking about Josh Fogg and Ismael Valdez probably.

A real soft thrower. We probably have just as good a chance at finding a keeper in our own pool of pitchers that we're bringing to the spring than any of the available pitchers (although Majewski's okay)

What about Jesse Ozozco ? I heard that he only needs the walker to get to and from the mound.

Linebrink is a pretty good middle reliever. Maybe he wants too much $$$.

There's a pervasive theory around MLB's GM's (at least the smart non-NY ones) that you get better results with cheap and hungry rookies in the middle/long relief roles that with overpriced (and overpitched) free agents.

I don't expect Kenny to get another reliever unless none of the kids pan out in spring training.

Good relievers===> Sox farm system. Well they might not be considered "good" beccause they are not proven, but this is where we are getting our pen help from.
