Default *Official* "Who should replace John Rooney?" Thread

One published report indicates that Ed Farmer will become the primary play-by-play voice of the White Sox next season with John Rooney being replaced by an analyst. Whether this is the direction the Sox go in or not, who would you like to see replace John Rooney now that he is going away?

I had replied in your other thread but I guess it got moved.. I don't know much about local guys or others around the league and their situations, but the only other guy I like nationally who I listen to regularly is Dan Schulman. This is the post I replied with:

Anyways, I also don't like the Farmer as PBP route. I'm not even a huge fan of Farmer, but Rooney fixed it and made it work, ended up sounding like a great chemistry to me, not to mention the best I've heard in radio of painting a picture of exactly what was going on. Trailing off again...

I would like them to go for a PBP man as a replacement. I don't really like any national guys except for one, I love Dan Schulman, who currently does PBP for ESPN Radio on Sunday Night Baseball and various other things. I don't know much about other local guys or people on other teams. People in Anaheim hate their TV guys and I heard they might be going but I don't really like them either. This is most likely going to suck as the radio was a great replacement for not having to hear Hawk, even if there was a delay, I liked John that much.

I've heard others suggest Stone. I like him, but isn't he more of an analyst? That would make Farmer move to PBP and I don't like that, them two would sound weird together to me. I've also heard Wills suggested, and I loved him as a pre/post guy, but haven't heard him done radio except when he filled in for a Sox broadcast when I think Rooney was doing college basketball. It was okay, leaves for me to be desired after being used to Rooney. Also, I know I shouldn't use this to measure it or have credence and the team there blows, but didn't the USA Today thing pick the Tampa Bay radio team last in the big leagues?

Default Bring back Willsy!

I love John Rooney, and am so sad that he is leaving, but why oh why couldn't this have happened last year? Anybody know how long of a deal Dave Wills signed with Tampa Bay?

If Willsy is the Sox fan he claims to be, he's got a escape clause built into his contract in the event of a job opening in the South Side TV/Radio booths.

Steve Dahl. He's actually talked to Farmer on the air a couple times how maybe someday, when Rooney retires or leaves for some reason, that it could be Dahl and Farmer doing the Sox.

I voted for Wills. Pat Foley might be my second choice if I had to make one. I love Meltie on the Post Game show but not for play by play. I just can't see it. I get an occasional kick out of Farmer, sometimes he really cracks me up, but he is DULL doing play by play.

I noticed Bump34 was viewing this thread earlier...I wonder if Dave voted for himself! Hey Willsy! Don't know if you can shed any light on this subject, but I can see I'm not alone in wanting to bring you back home.

Runners on 2nd and 3rd, nobody out, MY GUY! Chris Widger, up. At this point I'd like to welcome in Jesse Rogers and my beautiful wife Bebe who's showcasing a new dog for AdoptAPet. *cue Likrish barking soundbite*...Tune in in the 7th for Fritzy's Night on the Town where Knuckles and Fritz argue the best casino for good lookin waitresses!

Lucky for us I don't think there's a chance that happens, he's already rich from robbing the Score and I don't think he'd want to wait until the end of the day to start one of his 'night on the towns' where he ends up arrested with Jesse Rogers for picking up a transvestite hooker who was really an undercover cop.

Steve Stone and Ed Farmer are similar in their knowledge of the game and ability to decode and communicate to their audience bits of knowledge of the game that might not be known to most listeners. For that, I respect them, but wouldn't want both in the same booth.

Dave Wills is a perfect pre/post-game host. I don't think he's good enough for play-by-play, and he definately isn't qualified for the analyst role.

Robin Ventura would be my frontrunner at the moment because of how well he did filling in for Hawk earlier this season.

While I'm guessing it's a doubtful scenario, I would like to see DJ partner with Farmio on the radio. They are both good at what they do and DJ could only flourish with a partner who respects him and his thoughts.

Bill Melton would also be a good choice. His baseball honesty is appreciated.

Dave Wills, bring him back. Schulman sucks. I have a feeling the Sox want to torture me and would hire Shulman--I'd never listen to a Sox radio broadcast until he gone.

man, I was sooo damn bummed when I heard this. No disrespect to Farmer, but to me, I have no reason to listen to a Sox broadcast anymore. My two favorites are gone, first Dave Wills and now John Rooney....

PLEASE don't bring me the nasal whinings of Steve Stone. I seriously doubt he'd accept second banana to Farmer, anyway.

Maybe DJ will join Farmio. I don't know if anyone has noticed, but on whitesox.com. it says that DJ signed a 4-year extension back in Aug of 2001. That would mean his contract shold be up after this year. Haven't heard that he has renewed for tv, I wonder if they would ask him to do radio?

Well considering that New Orleans bit he did, he might be in a little bit of trouble and may be looking for a new job... so it's certainly possible, I guess.
