The small sample size always makes for interesting numbers at season's outset...here are some conversation starters from the Sox minors.
Charlotte: - LTP has followed up his hot spring by going 5-for-29 (.172) with nine strikeouts and only one walk. - Jon Adkins has followed up his hot spring by allowing 19 hits in 7 innings (16.71 ERA). - Brian Anderson is batting a decent .263 with 2HR, but has struck out 10 times in only 23 AB. - Kevin Walker has allowed 1 hit and 2 walks in 3 innings with 4 strikeouts...but has a 9 ERA. - Ozzie-in-waiting Pedro Lopez is batting .167 with no extra base hits and only one walk in 24 AB. - Mike Spidale is not getting the playing time he deserves. Nine AB so far. - These performances have catapulted the Knights out of the gate at 1-7. Birmingham: - Casey Rogowski is batting .321 but has somehow managed to strike out 14 times in 28 AB...with 3 walks. Seems like the umpires haven't learned to respect his eye yet. - Josh Fields is batting .368 and has as many walks as strikeouts (5 each). - Jerry Owens has 5 hits, all singles; 1 walk; and 3 steals. - The Barons starting rotation is averaging around 4 innings a start. The "ace", Sean Tracey, is averaging 5.5. Winston-Salem: - Chris Amador must be juicing. He's never shown any power but he has a double, a triple, and two home runs so far. What a pity that steroids don't improve strike zone judgment. - Carlos Lee the Younger is batting .636. Heck, we could probably put him in left right now and never notice the difference. Kannapolis: - Josh Hansen has 3 HR in his first 24 AB. If I'm not mistaken, he was beaten out at first by Chris Kelly, who is batting .150 with 11 strikeouts in 20 AB. - David Cook is 4-for-17 (.235)...but has 6 walks, for a great OBP. - Reliever Matt Zaleski has thrown 6 perfect innings, with 5 strikeouts. - Combined numbers for Ray Liotta and Gio Gonzalez (4 starts): 23 11 1 1 6 34 |

Ah, good. I know he's projected to be a 4th/5th outfielder, but he did so well in Birmingham that I would like to see him starting in Charlotte.
What's up with Rogo? Why so many Ks? |
