I don't see any mention of an option for 2006 which makes this deal absolutely worthless.

Scott Williamson needed a second Tommy John surgery on his elbow. He could miss all of next season.
During surgery, it was discovered Williamson pitched the last month with a completely torn ulnar collateral ligament, mangled cartilage ripped from the bone on the outer part of the elbow and several bone chips and loose bodies within the cavity of the joint. "I couldn't believe what I saw," said Dr. Tim Kremchek. "It looked like a grenade had gone off in there. The damage was far worse that the MRIs or any examination alluded to." Williamson, set to become a free agent, will probably sign an incentive-laden two-year deal with some team.

Could the cubs organization get any worse? First they pass up Matt Mantei willing to pitch for the league minimum and then they sign Williamson who won't even pitch in 2005 barring some sort of miracle. Oh well, I'll enjoy watching LaTroy Hawkins and Joe Borowski blow a lot of saves this season.

Hendry is not an idiot. There has to be an option for 2006 that just wasn't mentioned in the story. Either that, or he IS an idiot.

....and it's only $2 million. Not a bad signing at the moment, but let's see how it works in the long run. The same can be said with Ryan Dempster.

Even with the '06 option, this move doesn't help them this year with the blackhole that they have at the closer role. $2 million is a nice price if he can bounce back to his pre-injury numbers, but that's a big if.

I assume that's a club option with a buyout, probably $1M or less. I'd take that risk.

2 million for a guy who "had a grenade go off in his shoulder" and you say that's not a major waste of money? I guess it really doesn't matter since the league's luxury tax has absolutely no teeth, but I think the Cubs are falling into the trap the Sox have been in for the last few years where they are constantly looking to catch lightning in a bottle rather than spend a little more and get a consistent performer.

This signing officially falls in the huge risk, huge reward category. Williamson is very nasty and when he is on, he is virtually unhittable. He is supposed to ready in July and for the major league minimum in 05, what's to lose? That arm of his was a real mess so we will see.

So I guess spending money wise is not what is all about, its just having a 100 million dollar payroll. No wonder those damn Cubs win every year
