Anyone know where these guys will be starting 2005? I assume none are candidates to be seen in Chicago until at least 2007, right?

I think where they start this season will be determined in spring training. They have to make a club, after all, but I think the Sox are hoping that Lumsden and Whisler will start at W-S and that Gio will be at Kanny.

Next year Lumsden will probably start out starting in W-S. Whisler has a pretty good chance to start in Birmingham. Gonzalez will start in W-S.

Are you sure about Gio Randar? Everything I've seen/heard points to his starting in Kanny this season. The org. usually doesn't move high school pitchers that quickly.

Does anyone have more information about this Gio Gonzalez? All I know is that he came directly from high school, his mother mother had a blow-up with the high school baseball coach, and he has a very good curveball. Why is this kid so highly regarded? I would appreciate any information. Thank you.

Good fastball, Good changeup, Nasty curveball, good control all straight out of high school, he's got a chance to be an absolute star imo if he can remain healthy which is always going to be a question with him because he is a small guy.

He's also a lefty, which always helps.

We've had absolutely zero luck with the high school pitchers we've drafted over the past what? 15 years? I hope he, McCarthy, and Haigwood can buck that trend.

FYI McCarthy's a JC pick. I think he was a teammate of Ian Bladergroen. Talk about two low-round success stories.

Duh, that's right.

But if I can speak in my defense, Brandon has been pitching for the Sox since he was 19/20, so he was barely out of high school.

Buehrle was also from a JC. Seems we should keep the scouts at that level.

Brandon was 18 when drafted 1 year out of JC.

John Kasanas was the scout who signed Buerle and Brandon.

I don't think it's so much age (high school vs college) but projectability. Some guys are all done developing by early high school. Some not till college. The minors are full of guys who were good enough to get there, but never got much better.

Buehrle was drafted by Chicago area scout Nathan Durst. Mr. Durst was the area scout for Missouri during Marks Frosh year. Mark being drafted out of a JC and not signing as a frosh, he became a draft and follow player and was under control by the CWS for his soph season. John Kazanas took over the area during Marks soph. season. The Sox did not allow Mark to re-enter the draft and signed when his season was finished at Jefferson CC. Both scouts played key roles in aquiring Mark Buehrle.
