Sox send Maggs, Schoenweis, and Rauch to Oakland for Barry Zito, Bobby Kielty, 2 mid-level prospects
Sox send Zito and Adkins to the Yanks for Dioner Navarro, Tanyon Sturtze, 2 low-level prospects, and cash Sox then send Tanyon Sturtze, Bobby Kielty, Ben Davis and 4 prospects to Montreal for Livan Hernandez, Chad Cordero, and Carl Everett Sox lose: Maggs, Schoenweis, Rauch, Davis, Adkins Sox get: Dioner Navarro, Livan Hernandez, Chad Cordero, Carl Everett, cash A's get: Maggs, Schoenewies, Rauch A's lose: Zito, Bobby Freakin' Kielty, and 2 prospects Yanks get: Zito and Adkins Yanks lose: Sturtze, 3 prospects (Navarro included) and cash Montreal gets: Kielty, Sturtze, Davis, 4 prospects Montreal loses: Hernandez, Cordero, Everett THEN..... Sox, with the best rotation in AL and future C position filled, do NOT make a play at Kendall but make a play for Crawford instead. How about: Gload, Pacheco/Baj/Meaux, Munoz, Grilli/Stewart/Majewski, and Ruddy Yan for Crawford? I know it's a dream, it's el mundo loco, but the Sox wouldn't really be trading everything away. Hernandez, Cordero, Navarro and Crawford would all be around for a while and the Sox wouldn't be taking on much more money than they would normally pay Maggs. This would allow them to try and sign some guys like Garcia, especially with a solid team like this. Lineup: Crawford CF (320K) Uribe 2B (350K) Thomas DH (6mil) Lee LF (6.5mil) Konerko 1B (8mil) Valentin SS (5mil) Everett RF (3mil) Crede 3B (340K) Alomar C (700K) Rotation: Buerhle (3.5mil), Garcia (6.875mil), Loaiza (4mil), Hernandez (6mil), Garland (2.3mil) Pen: Cotts (301K), Diaz (300K?), Politte (800K), Cordero (300K), Marte (500K), Shingo (750K) Bench: Rowand (340K), Dransfeldt? (300K), Harris (318.5K), Perez (850K), Burke (300K?) I know that most of these guys are going to get raises, some of them pretty hefty, but right now we are looking at a team that would cost (in 2004) 57.9445mil. Dropping Maggs and some prospects wouldn't be the end of the world, in fact we would have a much better team all around. Given a raise in payroll due to increased attendance and a playoff run, the Sox could resign ALL of the players listed above.

the fact that you include crawford in any capacity makes this whole trade irrelevant.
a note to any budding GMs on the board: Carl Crawford is not an option. You would have to give away 3 or 4 premium prospects for him since he's making almost nothing and is one of the better players in baseball. Also you can't give away big time superstars because Tampa Bay can't afford them. Carl Crawford is not an option. |
