Default Who is the best pitcher in baseball?

In the past year a lot of pitchers have emerged and I think it's time to open this discussion again. We'll say that the criteria is who would you most want to have in 2004 and 2005.

I think it's Ben Sheets. He is ridiculously dominant at times and his worst outing all year is a 6 ip 4 ER performance. I know he's not battle tested or proven, but is that his fault that his team is just mediocre? If I were to pick one pitcher for 2004-2005, Ben Sheets might be the man.

A very good case could be made for CC Sabathia as well IMO

I think Carlos Zambrano. I know he got lit up by us, but he has some pretty nasty stuff and is still really young.

Mods: could you add the following next to Prior in the poll options "2-1 3.28 ERA"?

Jason Schmidt has been an NL pitcher his entire career, so it's always a risk to bring someone like that to the AL, but this is a fantasy thread and he's been getting better over the past 5 years or so. He's top flite right now.

What about an option for Carrie Woods?

There is a notable *AHEM* omission from the above list, therefore I will withhold my vote. Beckett has been injured, but so has Prior. You can't list everyone, I suppose.

Of the LIST I would begrudgingly vote for Prior. But I'm not voting. My vote goes without saying.

EDIT: Okay, I voted *other*

Clemens has two bad games and suddenly people are off of his bandwagon. At 41 the guy is still rolling with the best record in the NL. He could easily pitch until he is 45 and 400 victories is not absolutely out of the question.

I don't think there's a clear cut choice here. If there is, it's probably Prior.

But I don't want him. So I'll go with a personal favorite and say: Roy Oswalt.

Jason Schmidt has become so much better than any other N.L. pitcher that he could take the next three N.L. Cy Youngs. Health is the key.

If I had to pick someone to pitch Game 7 of the World Series right now, I'd have to say Clemens. If I was looking for someone to build a franchise around, no question... Prior.
