Default Sox ink Jay Treaty; TBD if Hahn must navigate by the light of his burning effigy

Numerous sources are reporting the Sox have signed free agent OF John Jay, pending a physical.

The reports also indicate Jay is good friends with Manny Machado, and that may be part of the impetus for the signing.

As Tweeted by Bob Nightengale:

The #Whitesox have agreement with free agent outfielder Jon Jay. He must complete physical for it to become official. So the Sox now have Manny Machadoís brother in law, Yonder Alonso, and close friend, Jay, on the team as they have offer on table for Machado.

And for those who donít get the historical reference, this history professor is fine citing the Wikipedia article, including this passage:

Quote:
Jay was denounced by protesters with such graffiti as "Damn John Jay! Damn everyone who won't damn John Jay!! Damn everyone that won't put lights in his windows and sit up all night damning John Jay!!!" One newspaper editor wrote, "John Jay, ah! the arch traitor Ė seize him, drown him, burn him, flay him alive."[97] Jay himself quipped that he could travel at night from Boston to Philadelphia solely by the light of his burning effigies.[98]

Maybe next, we'll make Machado's parents the next White Sox ambassadors.

Of course, in addition to the Machado angle, the Sox ought to find a way to trade for Madison Bumgarner, who is the subject of trade rumors between the Giants and Brewers.

With Madison, Jay, and Hamilton, the Sox could have all three authors of the Federalist Papers.

Make it fun for Manny in year one, playing with his buds, and fun thereafter playing on a young, contending team. Heís signing here. Book it. Done.

At the very least it's outfield depth for cheap. And he's a better hitter than Engel or Garcia. I'll take it.

I have to admit I didn't get the reference. I thought you meant that Hahn would be burned in effigy for signing Jon Jay instead of Harper or Machado.

The reports are that the Yankees won't top $200 million for Machado, and they're below our offer and the Phillies offer.

In response to this, the sox are spending money on more friends of Machado (we now have Yonder, Castillo, and Jay). The Phillies response to this is that they're going to give him a new offer this week.

I don't feel that confident in this strategy, but you never know.

MLB.com has a story on the Phillies offering more to Machado when they meet if I remember correctly.

So the Phillies make a second offer, the Sox match, and Machado gets to play with his friends. Works for me.

These signings of Alonso and Jay are bringing back bad memories of Hank Allen, brother of Richie call me Dick.

If the Phillies are increasing, it does lead credence to the notion that he prefers us to them. But if the Phillies offer a ton more money, I haven't really seen anything that would lead me to believe we're going to increase our offer. I think the plan is to offer a decent amount and fill the roster with friends on the short term.

I don't like this strategy and I don't think it will work. If I'm Machado, give me that extra $30 million you spent on these guys before you go out and get other players.

They've been in talks with Machado. I'm sure they discussed the possibility of acquiring his buddies to see if it would move the needle for him, and he said it would. I really doubt the money they're spending on Alonso/Jay has any impact on the Machado offer.

Also - you have no idea if the Sox will be willing to increase they're offer if the Phillies do, so you really should stop pretending you do. Buster Olney's tweet from a month ago is not proof of what the Sox are actually going to do. All we do know is that the Sox are serious about this signing and trying to do everything they can to get him.
