Jim Margalus at Sox Machine argues that we should be skeptical of those rumors; they may be old.

“Rumors” being the operative word here.

Most everything you hear is a rumor when it comes to free agent signings, trades, etc. Very little factual information is ever picked up by the media. Fans usually just cling to whichever story confirms what they believe to be true.

As a personal rule, I always ignore rumors, regardless of the source, until I see the player and GM sitting at the table with the player saying "I am glad to be with [team name], I look forward to making a positive contribution to the [team's name] success."

This way I am never miserable (see: ESPN).

Apparently Machado followed (then later unfollowed) a few Yankee social media accounts.

Tulowitzki goes to the Yankees, and this offseason is bizarre if they also get Machado. Surely this takes them out of the hunt.

Greatest Arsenal goal I have ever witnessed. Chills to this day watching it.

The #Yankees take no risk gamble by signing shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, who’s still being paid by the #Bluejays, per @JeffPassan. The #Yankees still want Manny Machado, who will begin fielding offers this week with #Whitesox and #Phillies still in the mix

Also, Andujar, Didi, and Tulo create a logjam unless one is traded

But the Yankees did just sign him to a minimum salary. I think it’s likely that Tulo is just a backup for the Yankees, but maybe they plan to have Machado play third if he signs with them? That could free them up to trade Andujar to a team like Cleveland for someone like Kluber.

Odds are Gregorius misses 1/2-2/3 or even possibly the entire season so they've got plenty of time to figure things out.

My guess is this is also a negotiating tactic with Machado.

Andujar has been on the trading block, Gregorius is sidelined until July at the earliest, and if Tulowitzki looks anything like his old self, he passes up both those players on the depth chart anyway.

I don't know if it's even related. Tulo has always wanted to be a Yankee. He's now getting paid $20 million this year by Toronto and the league minimum by NYY.
