Default WLS-AM Seeking to Get Out of Sox (and Bulls) Radio Deal Update: Sox sign with WGN

This motion was filed in bankruptcy court by Cumulus Media. I have no idea how likely this is to be granted.

If this happens, I hope the Sox will have learned their lesson by now and get rid of Farmer and DJ. I refuse to listen to them on the radio, they are awful.

This was a bad idea from the start.

ALTHOUGH....I was pretty damn impressed when I picked up 890 and listened to the Sox while driving in Texas last summer. That was cool.

It would be fantastic if the Sox could get back to a real sports radio station. If not, at least something better than WLS.

Agree that the Sox need a new radio broadcast team.

If the Sox (and Bulls) leave 890, where do they go? 720? 1000? 780?

WGN seems to be the most logical choice.

I'd like to see them on WGN as well, I think they would do a great job at promoting them. But, I wouldn't mid if they went back to AM 1000, only because they've had a relationship there and it's sports radio....Annnnd maybe we get less Jessie Rogers talk..omg, they might as well name the station WJESSIE, !

I got flamed here once for saying this, but I'm not a fan of the Sox being on WLS-AM and would be happy to see this deal end.

I doubt this will have any affect Farmer and DJ's employment status. I don't know the details of their contracts, but don't they really work for the Sox and not WLS?

WBBM-AM and WGN-AM would be good destinations if the WLS deal is voided. As far as WMVP goes, my biggest concern about them returning to AM 1000 is that their signal isn't that great and they don't have nearly the coverage as other AM stations do.

Here's another article on the bid to end the Sox and Bulls deal:

If they go to WBBM, hopefully the White Sox Weekly gig would go to Rob Hart.

Always thought it was an odd choice for a radio home since it had no sports connection prior to this except for Notre Dame coverage. Would be nice to get back on a station with a higher profile in the sports fan's mind..

Only good thing about WLS was that the signal was so weak by me, that I couldn't hear Farmer and Jackson!

Wasn't right for WLS from the start because of the people you're antagonizing by the games replacing shows they count on. WBBM would be a nice fit because they could keep the news going on the FM side for those listeners.

I emailed Brooks about my thoughts on those two and how I don't listen because of them. I also mentioned how I miss Rooney. He said he missed him too but he had an opportunity to go home, and didn't even defend Farmer or DJ....

As my beloved late father (who also loved the Sox) once asked me in the car during a Sox game while Farmer and DJ were on the air, "How in the hell can you listen to those two?"

Told Dad it was our team and I really had no other options.

The WLS deal was said to be pretty lucrative for the Sox and Bulls. Cumulus significantly outbid WSCR and WGN in 2015, and it's not too surprising that they're losing a lot of money on the deal. It's not clear from the articles if the Sox and Bulls could renegotiate their contracts with WLS to make them easier for Cumulus to afford.

Either way, it seems likely that the Sox will take a financial hit on this.

WGN is in the middle of an ownership change and is unlikely to take on a huge financial commitment right now. (They let the Cubs walk away after 50 years because that got too pricey for them.) WBBM is a possibility, but its owner, Entercom, already is paying $10 million for its Cubs contract at WSCR. WMVP seems an obvious choice, but ABC/Disney is unlikely to pay the same kind of money that Cumulus was.
