Default White Sox / Red Sox in talks...

Jon Heyman @JonHeyman

55s

Chisox have been in active talks with Red Sox and others on star 1B Jose Abreu. Boston was 1 of 4 finalists for Abreu when he signed with Chicago (Milwaukee & Houston were the others).

The return better be big, because that would be a gaping hole at 1B and--IMO, more importantly--in the clubhouse.

Completely agree. I'd hate to lose Abreu. Absolutely nothing wrong with having a solid veteran presence during a rebuild. You need role models and someone to show the young guys how to behave like adults. Abreu seems to have embraced that role. Plus, it helps that the guy can mash.

If they can get an amazing return, pull the trigger.

I am in no rush to move Abreu, but the team is in no position to turn down a deal if they're overwhelmed.

The Red Sox don't have much presence in MLB Pipeline's Top 100 prospects:

#42: Jay Groome, LHP
#92: Michael Chavis, 3B

Granted, MLB Pipeline's list hasn't been updated since the minor league season ended (other than to remove players who graduated from prospect status due to sufficient major league appearances), so these two could climb in the rankings, and other Boston prospects could crack the Top 100.

But as of right now, unless they are dealing young players from their major league team, such as Rafael Devers, I don't see much in their system that should interest us.

Would a deal of Abreu for Devers and Groome make sense?

I would do cartwheels if Abreu landed that type of return, but Devers is not going to be in an Abreu deal. Perhaps this is where all those Jackie Bradley Jr. rumors fit in? Perhaps a third team gives up prospects for Bradley?

Then there's probably not much of a fit.

My guess is that Boston would love to add Abreu, and that's where this rumor is originating.

Then it's incumbent upon Hahn ensuring that the deal with the third team is fully confirmed, and that he's getting back excellent prospects, before pulling the trigger.

Moncada just posted an extremely cryptic instagram post. Sounds like he is getting ready to say bye or is telling the organization not to trade him.

Also, is there a way for the Red Sox to give us money or give us entry into signing Othani?

Don't worry - if a deal went through and that didn't happen, it would obviously just be a Kenny deal!

I assume that is how most three-team trades work, with contingency stipulations. I do not know that for certain, though.

However, if the team thinks a package of Bradley+prospects is maximum value for Abreu, then I donít have a problem with it. There is a risk of Bradley losing value if he stays here, but the same risk also applies to Abreu, so that part of it is a wash.

The thing with Bradley is that I am not sure where he fits. As a stop gap? Okay, fine, but he won't win with us. By the time we're ready to do that, he will need to be phased out. Unless Roberts doesn't develop. Which is possible, of course.

It definitely sounds like he is getting ready to say bye. I can't see him telling the Sox not to trade him.
The front office has earned my trust that if they make a move, it will be because they got an outstanding offer.

Both Avi and Delmonico liked the message...

I agree. Whatever the club decides, I will trust the move. Still, this one will hurt me a little bit. He was a professional through and through, and I really wanted him to win with us.
