On the other hand, sometimes one letter changes the meaning of a word in a way that results in humorously unintended consequences. I keep seeing FLACK here when someone is getting criticized, when FLAK which means anti-aircraft fire is what the writer intends. FLACK refers to a press agent (whom we might want to shoot out of an anti-aircraft gun.)

Before the Cubbies became great(!) someone here wrote that they were acquiring young, hungary players which made me think that they had signed Al Hrabosky.

Might also be autocorrect messing with things. I have submitted posts from my iPad only to go back later and read them and think, "how the **** did that happen?!?!?!"

The word you were trying for got selected in the rule 5 draft ahead of you and was no longer available. Vanna says you can buy it back for $50,000.

Here's my current take on the 25 man roster to open the 2018 season.

I think we still have an open rotation spot (due to Rodon's injury) at least 2 open roles in the bullpen, and with A. Hanson and J. Peter leaving the org, and with Saladino's ongoing back issues, I project L. Garcia as the "super sub" guy, with Tilson (fragile) and Cordell the lead contenders for CF.

Pitching-Starters
1. Giolito
2. Lopez
3. Shields
4. Fulmer
5. Veteran FA
Other: Rodon (DL)

Pitching-Bullpen
6. Minaya- Closer
7. Jones
8. Soria
9. Avilan (L)
10. Bummer (L)
11. TBD
12. TBD
Other: Farquhar, Infante, Vieira, Ruiz

Infield/DH
13. Abreu- 1B
14. Moncada- 2B
15. Anderson- SS
16. Sanchez- 3B
17. Davidson- Back Up 1B/3B/DH
18. L. Garcia- Utility IF/OF

Outfield/DH
19. A. Garcia- RF
20. Tilson- CF
21. Delmonico- LF/1B/DH
22. W. Garcia
23. Cordell
Other: Engel, Palka

Catcher
24. W. Castillo
25. Narvaez
Other: Smith

I'm guessing we sign Miguel Gonzalez or maybe even Santiago to fill rotation & then long relief if/when Rodon comes back.

Does Narvaez still have options? Would be interested in seeing him play every day in AAA and have Smith be the backup. If Collins is at AA then both he and Narvaez can play every day with Narvaez potentially being insurance if Collins doesn't pan out.

The more I've thought about it the less I expect the Sox to sign a free agent starter. Maybe Gonzalez or Santiago as suggested (and I originally expected) but the more I think about it the more I expect them to hope to limp through the start of the season with:

1. Shields
2. Giolito
3. Lopez
4. Fulmer
5. Covey

Scares the crap out of me but Kopech likely shows up in May or June and Rodon later in the year so they could be hoping to end the season with:

1. Shields
2. Giolito
3. Lopez
4. Kopech
5. Rodon

Which looks pretty good to me. Especially if you then expect Hansen to be ready in 2019.

I see no reason to think Ruiz is a major league pitcher. I expect Jones, if healthy, or Soria to be the closer but really it is open to anyone that steps up. I would expect Vieira to be given every opportunity to make the team but agree with those three as the most likely options (along with Minaya) to fill the last spots in the bullpen. Despite their numbers last year I am not yet a believer in either Infante or Minaya.

I think Davidson is your DH and Saladino is your backup IF.

I won't count on Tilson until he makes it through spring training. I also think L. Garcia is a possible starter in the OF though he is best suited for the top utility guy as you say. I would say A. Garcia, Cordell, and Delmonico as starters with W. Garcia as backup OF and L. Garcia as utility guy.

If Tilson is healthy I would expect him to start at AAA and get back into the baseball groove before coming to Chicago. It's been quite awhile since he has played.

If Engel figures out how to hit even a little that changes everything as he starts in CF and Cordell in LF and Delmonico splits DH with Davidson.

Isn't Palka a 1B?

Yeah, pretty much. Hopefully Collins has a good year and we see him in September.

Merkin reports Shields is the likely opening day starter. Not a surprise given the cast of characters available, but man, James Shields!

Yikes. If I study this at any length my special 100 proof rum is about to get sampled a bit. Maybe more than just a bit.

Don't see why...this will be a bad team in 2018. It's expected ahead of time. Part of the plan.

He was looking pretty decent until he was traded to Minnesota- then complete suckage since then- does anyone know why?

Thatís OK. Root for individual success of young players and prospects, and for veterans to play well to increase their trade value. And at the same time, losing more games means one more dive into the deep end of the talent pool and the draft bonus pool in June 2019.
