Unless I'm reading that wrong, it seems like a lot less of a risk to grab him now than it would have been had he'd waited. So you have to pay a $20M posting fee. For a $75M payroll team in '18, that seems like nothing. Alas, I suppose there'll be a bidding war.

Sox already blew their Int'l wad on Robert, so they can't sign anyone for more than $300k until 2019. It is understandable, because I don't think Ohtani wants to come here anyway. A bird in hand is worth two in the bush.

He does not count towards the international cap, that is why all 3 teams are able to be in play for him. If he was 25, then the cap comes into play.

No, it is the other way around. If he was 25 he could sign for whatever he wants, but because he is 23 he is bound by International Pool Rules.

White Sox can only pay him $300k compared to the Rangers' $3.55 million but I assume every team will still take a crack at getting him. Why not? It wouldn't hurt anything and he's so intriguing.

I wouldn't be surprised if Otani signed with the team of his choice regardless of the offer. He's already made several million at least in Japan, and will be earning tens if not hundreds of millions in the long run. He seems to be thinking long term, I doubt 3 million makes a difference to him in this decision.

It's a joke that he is bound to amateur restrictions to begin with, the man is clearly a professional player. MLB is essentially discriminating based on age and nation of origin rather than experience. Is Bryce Harper an amateur. I think not

These inconsistencies and inequities will not fully resolve themselves until there is a global draft, that combines domestic amateur talent, along with amateur and professional talent from international markets.

Imagine the shenanigans that can be pulled under the guise of a global draft.

Hahn told the media today the Sox did make an offer / presentation to his agent this past week. He admitted it was a long shot but said the Sox wanted to take every opportunity to improve the talent in the organization.

A Japanese newspaper today in a story said that the kid is down to five teams, Dodgers, Yankees, Padres and two unnamed ones.

What blew my mind was another report that despite teams having nothing to lose, there were some MLB teams that never even submitted a proposal.

MLB Network said the other two teams are Seattle and Texas, IIRC.

The NBA manages to conduct a global draft without any shenanigans, so I think MLB will someone manage it.

Sounds like he’s going to end up on the West Coast. Yankees and Red Sox are out. Passan thinks it’s SF or Seattle.
