Default Breakout year for Avi Garcia?

I know most of us around here are still skeptical, but this si.com writer seems to think there's more to his hot start than just a good streak to start the year.

I hope it's true...they'll actually get something for him when they trade him.

Nice article. Thanks for posting. I hope the author is right. Many of us have predicted -- every year -- that "this was going to be the year" that Garcia finally figures it out.

It's hard to get a read on Avi because his past history is pretty hard to get a read on. He didn't really have crazy success in the minors, but some of that could be attributed to the fact that the Tigers rushed him through at a ridiculous pace. That slash line that the author mentioned was from a very small sample size (216 at bats) but at the same time he was very young for the level. I would cool my jets and see how the league and Avi adjust before declaring any sort of breakout.

This would, of course, be really nice.

How many years of control after this one? Three more? I think I saw somewhere that he has just over three years of actual service time...

This would put him under Sox control through the '20 season, yes?

I hope he makes it to the All-Star game this year.

2 weeks is 2 weeks. I don't believe his hot streak is any more real than Jose's cold streak. During the course of a season, every player, even the bad ones, has great weeks or even months before coming down to earth. It's just that when those stretches come at the beginning of the year people tend to overestimate their significance.

That said, I sure hope I'm wrong.

Like I said earlier, he's shown streaks before. Let's see him put in an entire year of hitting well at the major league level before declaring that he has finally arrived.

I've said it before, slugging is the key to Avi's success, or lack there of. If he can slug at about a .450 clip, and carry about a .750 OPS he can be a very useful player for us when we start turning the corner in a couple of years. He doesn't have to be a star.

Ivan Calderon was our main man on offense once upon a time, hitting mostly line drives. HR's are not the whole story. That said, he jumped on that curve ball tonight like a power hitter ought to. Fun game to watch.

It's always good beating the Yankees.

Jose's cold streak lasted a lot longer than 2 weeks last year. Then again it's hard to break out when you're trying to bunt with runners on when you're the 4 hitter.

Didn't Avi have a decent start to 2016 too? I seem to recall some writer with BP Prospectus going on the SouthSideSox podcast and explain why he thought Avi had turned a corner and pointed to his exit velocity. I hope he's figured something out, but it's still too small of a sample size to tell for sure.
