I love baseball but the overvaluing of teams and players like this shows an incredibly illness in our society and economic system. It's not just baseball of course but it really stands out.

If that profit number is correct, we're talking 32x earnings valuation. Seems pretty steep!!

Not a bad ROI for the investors. They paid a comparative pittance for the team back in the early '80s.

A pittance for baseball, anyway.

Default 2018

After JR guts this team the 2018 White Sox payroll be probably be one of the lowest in MLB at $50 million. You'll be looking at a profit of around $100 million for the 2018 season. The White Sox will have one of the most profitable teams in MLB, even with a last place team. It would be the perfect time to put the team up for sale.

But it's not happening...sorry to disappoint you (yet again).

The only time the current ownership group received any type of dividend since they took over in 1981 was after the 2005 season. When JR solicited investors, he told them that they should not expect a dividend check from the team.

Oh, the owners have to pay for their own tickets if they want to see the team play.

Not really, any buyer is going to look deeper than the profitability numbers and see the sustainability of those profits.

Of course the owners can all easily afford it as well given their financial resources to buy into the team in the first place.

Default Sox Value

15th in MLB is great considering the Sox don't own the ballpark.

If the Marlins are worth 1.2 billion, the White Sox better damn be worth more than that. We're not THAT terrible of a franchise.

Not owning the ballpark is a plus, not a minus. Very little rent, no maintenance, no R.E. Taxes.

Just think of Bud Selig's year over year investment from the Brewers when he bought and sold his franchise. Then moving to a position with a super-high salary of a pro sports commissioner.

With other owners controlling bids, they have the power to make others very wealthy. With media deals going up, up, up and revenue-sharing, they make sure everyone is taken care of. Amazing to think what Reinsdorf will cash out someday for his family for a relatively small ownership level versus what other people have. I am looking forward to the next Sox owner because that person is likely to have a lot of personal money to invest, and the right person may more aggressively pursue a championship. At that point, the team's prospects may have panned out as a whole and some FA additions could make quite a team.
