If he rebuilds his team with elite starting pitching that didn't wear down getting the A's to where they are now (Beane's philosophy is you don't need to pay for a closer because relievers who aren't paid big money will emerge to get the job done), he would have built a team that got to the postseason and rebuilt it into a different team best positioned for a postseason run. That is certainty not the way the Giants across the Bay did it twice in recent years. I can't think of any team that has ever done it that way.

It's not the way to build a fanbase, but the A's don't care about building a fanbase. They have been trading popular players for years. Sometimes it seems they discourage fans while the Giants sell out every game even in their down seasons, in large part because they have players who have made a connection to fans while winning two recent World Series.

In one sense, what the A's are doing is a cynical way to approach the business of baseball. I have long believed that the trade deadline was better when it was June 25. I'm not sure what year it changed, but it was June 25 in 1983, and sometime later when I wasn't looking, it became the end of July. The end-of-July deadline now seems as big as draft day for baseball, but it has contending teams generally raiding non-contenders with lottery-like promises of the future.

I wouldn't shed a tear, would likely celebrate if the A's collapsed, but the way I feel about the A's, that is something that could be said truthfully at any time. I would love to see the hot prospects traded at deadline to come nowhere near reaching their potential, more often than already is the case, unless the White Sox are involved because they are the only team I care to see win.

I continue not to like what Billy Beane is doing to baseball.

I really question this move by the Cardinals. I know they have Tavares but giving Craig up for an old pitcher like Lackey is puzzling. This, also considering they just got Masterson and have Wacha coming back. Its a big haul for the Red Sox.

Craig's been really bad this year. And while Lackey is old, he's also ridiculously cheap.

From fangraphs:
Cespedes: 2.9 WAR / 600 plate appearances
Fuld: 2.5 WAR / 600 plate appearances

Love this move for Oakland. They were never gonna keep Cespedes past next year anyway.

Yeah he has certainly had a down year, but he seems like a good candidate for a bounce back year. Red Sox buying low and selling high I guess.

I don't think they can count on Wacha coming back, and Craig has been weighing down their offense all year.

Lackey can still pitch, and he has a very cheap option the Cardinals can pick up for next year, too.

Craig's been really bad, just turned 30, has never played a full healthy season, and is a major roadblock in front of uberprospect Oscar Tavares. He's also owed like $30 million over the next 3-4 years, I believe. Joe Kelly also stinks, a 1.5 WHIP may cut the mustard in the National League where teams are just giving outs away, but here in the Big Boy AL? We'll see.

Red Sox are having a field day thus far. Great job.
