Default The Battered Bastards of Baseball

Just watched the new documentary, "The Battered Bastards of Baseball," on the independent Class A Northwest League Portland Mavericks, who under the ownership of actor Bing Russell, revived baseball in Portland, Oregon in the mid-1970s.

I had never heard/read anything about the Mavericks, but the story is fascinating, from Bing Russell's introduction to baseball at age 9, to his against-the-grain ownership style and philosophy that took on the baseball establishment during an era when independent teams had all but disappeared, to the interesting players who came to play for the club.

If you have a Netflix subscription, I highly recommend watching it.

The universe is the practical joke of the General at the expense of the Particular, quoth Frater Perdurabo, and laughed. The disciples nearest him wept, seeing the Universal Sorrow. Others laughed, seeing the Universal Joke. Others wept. Others laughed. Others wept because they couldn't see the Joke, and others laughed lest they should be thought not to see the Joke. But though FRATER laughed openly, he wept secretly; and really he neither laughed nor wept. Nor did he mean what he said.
