Default Samardzija and Hammel to the As

For Addison Russell, Straily and another prospect.

Ole Billy's been changing his game. Probably figures prospects are now overvalued.

He's been stockpiling prospects for years. Now he probably has figured out it's more important to try and win the World Series opportunity before you.

Two thoughts-

First, Theo's doing the old "make a huge ass trade on a holiday to ease some of the backlash". This is a perfect storm, being a Friday holiday, so he's got the weekend buffer too.

Surprised they are also dealing 40% of their starting rotation.

Wow. That's a punch to the gut because the team seems to be actually starting to gel a bit. Arietta I suppose will be the next to go based on the injury risk he is.

I'd call it a Friday Night Massacre, but I'm too impressed. Nice work Theo.

I'm curious as to what the Cubs are going to do with Castro, Baez, Soler and now Russell in the middle infield. Not a bad problem to have though, Soler is a very long way away and one of those guys can move to outfield.
Worthy gamble for both teams. I think this year is the A's best shot.

I think it's a real good deal for the Cubs. But they will have to find some pitching. Straily isn't bad right now and could improve.

I wonder if the As couldn't have gotten Price for Russel and Straily.
The Cubs essentially got the As #2 prospect or Straily for Hammels, which is pretty good, esp if compared to say, E Jax return.

Straily has been inconsistent in the majors. He showed promise last year. This year, he was sent down in early May and has been inconsistent for the Sacramento River Cats with an ERA approaching 5 despite striking out more than one hitter per inning. No doubt he'll return to the majors with the Cubs and face hitters who don't know him. He might turn in an impressive start or two. I don't think he is anything Cubs fans should get excited about, though.

Russell is a strong prospect, a shortstop who has never played anywhere else defensively in the minors. Apparently the Cubs have a hole at shortstop. Russell was the first-round pick of the A's two years ago.

Billy McKinney isn't close the majors. He isn't having a very good season in A ball this year. He didn't look good against the Modesto Nuts in May, but obviously he is still in development.

The Cubs seemed to be demanding a lot more than this for Samardzija, and to get this, they had to throw in Hammel. If I were a Cubs fan, I would be disappointed.

The excitement among A's fans will be tempered by the fact that Samardzija hasn't been pitching as well lately, and even if he does well moving to the American League, he probably won't re-sign with Oakland.

I like the deal for the A's. I thought the Cubs would get more than three players back when they traded these two pitchers. And Straily is the only one of the three who can be put in the big leagues immediately. The other two are quite some time away. I'm sure the move will be hailed in Chicago as more proof of Theo's genius, but I don't buy it.

They got another position player prospect? Don't they DESPERATELY need pitching?

I don't think Jeff S. warranted a top 5 prospect in all of baseball. Way overrated pitcher. But he's the only top 100 they had, so that was that if they wanted a good pitcher.

Yes. My assumption is they'll flip some of these "prized" position prospects for pitching, but that's easier said than done.

When a team offers one of the best prospects in baseball do you really care what position he plays?

Great haul for the Cubs.

The only reason to be disappointed as a cubs fan is if you are worried about the positions. Russell in terms of value is INCREDIBLE. Whoever said he was years away doesn't follow prospects. There was thought this year he would be a September call up in Oakland if they were not competitive at years end.
