Default Eric Surkamp recalled

Scott Downs designated for assignment and recalled left-hander Eric Surkamp from Class AAA Charlotte.

Surkamp, 26, has gone 3-4 with a 4.54 ERA (37 ER/73.1 IP) and 84 strikeouts in 14 games (11 starts) with Charlotte this season, his first in the White Sox organization after being claimed off waivers from San Francisco on December 23, 2013.

Dan Hayes ‏@DanHayesCSN

Don Cooper said on a local radio show that he believes the White Sox parted with Scott Downs.

Well those numbers are unimpressive and uninspiring.

Upon closer inspection, only his ERA stands out as bad. The rest of his peripherals are promising.

"His fastball sits upper 80s with a top end of 91, so he isn't blazing it past anyone. He gets ground balls with the sinking action on his two-seam fastball, and he misses bats with a combination of movement and excellent control. Multiple sources indicate hes known for his strong mound presence and baseball IQ."

It would be nice if this guy works out. Other than Matt Thornton, we have really struggled to find a good lefty that actually "sticks" in recent seasons. I realize many teams struggle to find bullpen lefties but take a look at the sad list of lefties we have chewed through in the last 5 years:

Scott Downs
Donnie Veal
David Purcey
Leyson Septimo
Charlie Leesman
Will Ohman
Erick Threets
Randy Williams
Wes Whistler
Jimmy Gobble

Surkamp up here, Carroll back in the rotation...we're digging deep. If great bullpens make great managers (can't remember who said that) then our manager deserves lotsa tolerance with whatever happens on the mound.

As far as ownership's newfound willingness to eat bad contracts, I'd be more thrilled if the replacements for the guys they cut had any baseball skills. So far, I'm unconvinced.

That is a half decade, and probably more, of poor drafting and talent evaluation.

Not much that can be done outside of getting better at drafting or trading off guys like Sale or Abreu to majorly restock. The latter is inadvisable.

No arguing about not dumping the only talent we have. We were running out guys like Andy Gonzales and Ryan BBukvich by '07. I feel like blaspheming and including player development with drafting and evaluation.

Surkamp, 26, will wear uniform No. 53.

At this point, I could not care less who replaces Scot Downs, but I am quite pleased to see that Downs was DFA'd
