Default Abreu to decline Home Run Derby

Thank goodness.

It's good for him and his production in the 2nd half to skip IMO....but also bad because it would be great National exposure if he were to do well.

I'd be more excited about this if we had a realistic chance to make a second-half run. Not that it's implausible, but it's got to be considered unlikely at this point. Given that, I wish he would have done it. Big-picture-wise, the Sox have more to gain from Abreu becoming a star on the national stage than they do from finishing in fourth place instead of fifth.

But I get it, and I certainly don't begrudge his decision.

Awful awful awful to have a derby. It does nothing other than hurt swings. I'm glad abreu is out.

It sounds like Abreu has really thought this through, so if he thinks it will mess with his mechanics, he's making a good decision. I hope Sale, Ramirez, and Abreu make the All-Star Team. It would be nice to see multiple Sox players.

I really like what he said, that he doesn't try to hit homers. They just come as they will. Can we clone him?

Unless his ankle is still legitimately bothering him, Abreu will wind up in the Home Run Derby.

Abreu, who takes a measured, workmanlike approach to his hitting, voiced concerns about how the contest might affect his swing.

‘‘The first thing it does is affect you mentally,’’ he said. ‘‘You go out and try to hit home runs. I’m not a guy who tries to hit home runs. I let them come whenever they come. And sometimes it messes with your mechanics.’’

HR Derby does not affect a player's swing. One of the most ridiculous myths in baseball.

Well, if he keeps on the current pace and winds up with an MVP in his rookie season, that could be good national exposure too.

MVP is probably a two-horse race between Trout and Donaldson. Jose provides nothing defensively and is on a bad team -- he'll have to hit 55 homers to have a real shot.

Jose's best shot at national exposure is probably HR Derby/ASG and hitting 50 home runs.

That said, he's already become the most recognizable player on our team. He's been fawned over on Baseball Tonight and other studio shows since mid-April.

Which is surprising since I recall PK credited his 2nd half offensive struggles due to competing in the HR Derby several years ago.

Bautista, the Blue Jays slugger and captain of AL Derby squad, said Thursday that he planned to speak with Abreu over the course of the four-game set at Rogers Centre.

"I'd like to hear that from himself, I don't want to use sources for that decision. I don't want to not invite him and then he's upset, or disappointed, that I didn't, if I didn't talk to him personally," said Bautista.

Thank you. We remember a few people who had awful results after doing it and it makes us think there's a pattern. All the players who went on to have productive second halves simply fade into obscurity in our minds. This belief is strictly a function of the way the brain stores data. Unusual/traumatic results cause us to hardwire the data into our brain for future reference in case it might be important.
