KANSAS CITY – Prior to tonight’s game at Kansas City, the Chicago White Sox placed right-handed pitcher Matt Lindstrom on the 15-day disabled list with a sublexing peroneal (outside) tendon in his left ankle and purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Javy Guerra from Class AAA Charlotte.

Lindstrom, 34, suffered the injury in the ninth inning of last night’s victory over the Royals while attempting to field a bunt by Alcides Escobar and will return to Chicago to undergo further examination. He is 2-1 with a 3.32 ERA (7 ER/19.0 IP) and six saves in 19 appearances this season.

Guerra, 28, is 1-1 with a 2.33 ERA (5 ER/19.1 IP) and three saves in 14 relief appearances with Charlotte in 2014, limiting right-handers to a .229 (8-35) average. He was claimed by the White Sox off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on March 26.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Guerra has gone 4-5 with a 2.90 ERA (33 ER/102.1 IP), 87 strikeouts and 29 saves over parts of three major-league seasons with the Dodgers (2011-13). He recorded a 2.31 ERA (12 ER/46.2 IP) with a team-high 21 saves in 23 chances over 47 appearances as a rookie in 2011 and followed with a 2.60 ERA (13 ER/45.0 IP) and eight saves in 2012.

Guerra will wear uniform No. 41.

The White Sox 40-man roster increases to 40.

Guerra emerged as the Dodgers' closer around the All-Star break of his rookie season, 2011, and saved something like 20 of 22 games. He blew his third save of the 2012 in his 11th opportunity, in a game against the Cubs in early May, the Dodgers moved him out of the closing roll, and he never had another major league save. The Dodgers moved Jansen into the role. He's not having a great season, but he's still there in the ninth when the Dodgers are up by three runs or less.

Having not seen Guerra pitch in a long time (I did see him hit in a game against the Reds in which he walked in his only major league appearance), I would be just guessing that he might be coming up to be the closer. Francisco doesn't instill confidence. Webb has been having control issues. Belisario might be tops on my list of pitchers I'd like to see closing games if you insist on designating one pitcher. But that was true before Lindstrom took the mound Monday.

Matt Lindstrom
injury likely is going to require surgery, according to Robin Ventura. We are waiting on official word of diagnosis.

Dan Hayes ‏@DanHayesCSN

Sounds like surgery upcoming for Matt Lindstrom. Robin Ventura isn't sure if its season-ending. More to come

I think it's subluxing.

Jose Abreu
was at U.S. Cellular Field on Thursday receiving treatment on his left ankle.

"So far, he's progressing and we continue to be optimistic about him being ready about the time the 15 days are up," said Hahn of Abreu, who can come off the DL on June 2. "We want to be as forthright as we can be in explaining our thought process beyond placing a guy on the DL and when we expect to come off. Sometimes it takes a little longer for soreness to go away or for inflammation to decrease."

Abreu took 25 ground balls, played catch for 10 minutes and then hit 30 off of a tee. He felt great.

Abreu took grounders and played long toss. In the cage now

White Sox have removed Felipe Paulino from his rehab assignment with AAA Charlotte because of right shoulder soreness. He's still on the DL.
