Flip the situation around. Considering the inflated value of decent catchers, if Rick Hahn traded a catcher, even if he had a glut of them, we would expect him to do a little bit better than Gordon Beckham. If he got Jeff Keppinger, we would mutiny.
Yes we would, but the Sox certainly have traded what they saw as excess before and haven't. And then you have to throw in that the Yanks see themselves as contenders plus have a huge IF hole, so there's a chance they overpay.
I just wouldn't trade real assets for a backup catcher.
I'm anxious to see how the Nieto situation plays out. I've been bullish on him making this roster. But if he doesn't it will be interesting to see if the Sox view him as a real prospect. I wouldn't expect a lot of effusive talk about him, just because the Sox may have to work out a deal with the Nats to keep him. If we like him, no real need to chase a catching prospect.
