Default Protective headgear available soon for hurlers

It won't be mandatory (yet).

Better to implement it now than after someone gets killed.

Also if I'm not mistaken a couple years ago all hurlers in Ireland with the exception of the level were forced to wear helmets & face masks.

It sounds like there are different companies developing different types of safety head gear for the pitchers. I really like the kevlar coating under the cap idea. This way, the pitcher will get the protection he needs but it won't interfere with the traditional look of the baseball cap.

Looks like a hideous novelty foam hat. I'll be surprised if anyone other than Nails wears one.

Pretty forward-thinking of MLB to take initiative on this, especially given the issues the NFL is having. Of course, there's no comparison at all between the number of times a running back gets tackled and the number of times a pitcher gets hit with a comebacker. This is a very small number of cases.

I sometimes wonder why more guys don't wear goggles/visors the way that Eric Gagne or Tyler Clippard do when they're pitching (a very high percentage of people are nearsighted, there's got to be more than 2 nearsighted pitchers) for the safety rather than the fashion, but I suppose the odds of being hit in the eye with splinters is even less.

Such as? Our HS team looks no differently protection wise than a MLB team.

These are not designed to prevent concussions which is the issue the NFL is dealing with. There isn't a helmet in existence that will prevent concussions. These are to keep people's skulls intact.
