Default What now for Marcus Semien?

With Matt Davidson penciled in at 3B, what is Semien's role this season and going forward with the team?

I'm guessing he'll start 2014 at 2B in Charlotte.

I don't think Davidson is a lock to make the team out of the gates in 2014 both for developmental and contractual reasons.

Unless Semien has an absolutely monster Spring and forces the Sox's hand, I'd assume he'll be in Charlotte and might be the first guy up if the Sox make a move with Keppinger or Beckham.

Semien is still a potential long-term solution at 2B because I can't imagine Beckham will be around much longer barring an unforseen rise in production.

I had just assumed that Davidson will be in AAA to start the year and probably be up later.

Why not? Clearly he's a utility player at best.

As for the question of the thread, I figure Davidson and Semien are both in a position to win a spot on the roster. I don't see Keppinger blocking either of those guys when they're ready. Both have already played in the majors in more than just a Sept. call up role, so I'd assume they are borderline at worst.

edit: Upon further review, I guess Semien was a Sept. call up. I thought he was already on the roster prior to expansion but I was mistaken. At any rate, he got more than just pinch running time in and I would argue looked fairly solid. Davidson, though, was in fact called up prior to roster expansion.

Another year at AAA. At the end of the year, we'll get a feel for Semien, Johnson and Beckham. Then we can move one for a young player that strengthens something else.

We need to spiff Keppinger up so we can trade him. Play him for a couple of months.

Keppinger makes 4M in 2014 and 4.5M in 2015, the only way he can be traded is if he plays. I dont see the Sox paying this kind of money for a bench player the next two years.

I hope that is not their thinking, because that is a crap way of going about putting a team together. Playing a player because otherwise you can't get rid of him isn't going to make him any better, just the team worse.

Default Bruce Levine

I went to Soxfest today and I talked to Score announcer Bruce Levine. I asked him if he thought the White Sox would make a big trade before Opening Day. He said if they did it would probably involve Alexi Ramirez for a catcher or a pitcher. He thinks that if that happens Beckham will be at short and Semien would be at second. We shall see.

I just dont remember recently the Sox having a player with that type of contract sitting on the bench much.

Plenty of players on plenty of teams get treated better than their production because of their contract. The Sox playing Keppinger despite his poor 2013 season would not at all be unprecedented.

And yes, it makes perfect sense to play him in hopes of shopping him. His value is low right now, but the Sox gain nothing if he sits and it remains low. There's no risk to playing him; if he's bad, his value is still low. If he plays well, his value rises.

It is also reasonably possible that Keppinger will improve his production this season to acceptable levels....playing him won't hurt the team and will dress him up to send to the Yankees or someone.

Mark Teahen is the only one that comes to mind immediately. He was making some big money off the bench.

He's not a big prospect or anything, so I don't expect them to move anything around for him.
