Not much. I think people need to come to terms with what the market is. Look at these paydays for middling pitchers. Danks doesn't even look so ridiculous (Ok, maybe a little, but who knew he's get injured?).

Garbage players get $4-$5 mil a season.

If Danks wasn't injured, he'd easily be worth more than that on the open market. Look at the market now...guys like Garza and Jimenez in their twilight are looking at more than Danks money. Ervin Santana is looking at more than Danks money. Danks, when he signed his deal, was WAY more valuable than these guys. He'd easily have fetched $20 million per year on the open market today if he was healthy.

I was thinking that also. Say Danks has a 11-13 season he will be tradeable or at least dumpable. The market is crazy and Id have to say that whatever Tanaka gets wont be outrageous. Now if the market crashes sure it will be looked as ridiculous but if it keeps flying it could be a bargain. My thinking is that no matter what the Sox would pay him shouldnt majorly hamstring the organization. Him and Danks would be the only long term big money contracts on the books. The players they are counting on are on the cheap for many years to come. Revenue and club worth is like it has never before. I hope they go all in on Tanaka.

Tanaka’s agent, Casey Close, has told clubs that he wants the bidding to remain extremely confidential. The White Sox acknowledged that general manager Rick Hahn, club president Ken Williams and manager Robin Ventura attended the meeting

Does this mean confidential from the media or confidential from team to team? Wouldn't they want teams to know what others are offering Tanaka in order to create a bidding war?

It's going to be a hard sell since we don't have a catcher. They should have signed Kurt Suzuki if they were serious about this.

Whatever Tanaka gets might look outrageous now, but by year 3-4 of the contract, his AAV will look pretty normal.

Suzuki is only has good as you think in name only. He sucked last year.

I know he is not good, but he might be a selling point for Tanaka.
Wouldn't you rather play someplace where you had a teammate to talk to?

He's American -- born in Hawaii; college at Cal State Fullerton. I guess he could speak Japanese, but if so, it's not his first language.

Per Bob Nightengale's twitter the dodgers plan to go "all out" in efforts to sign Tanaka, saying they will not be outbid.

I really don't see him going anywhere else...

We can hope though right?

I think Kurt would take issue with this....

Kurt Suzuki doesn't speak Japanese and is from Hawaii

Also,

Tanaka has studied English quite a bit

Took me all of two minutes to find that. Come on, folks, do some legwork.

But nice assumption.
