Default Tanaka to the Yankees...7 yrs, $155 million

The Sox are at least going to talk to Tanaka:

An unlikely signing, yes. But who knows? Under the radar for sure.

At least they met with him in LA and not here because the city is not exactly selling itself this week.

We don't ever get involved in these things (at least prior to this year). For it to be public, we're probably going to make a serious offer.

Given the money we threw at Abreu, it wouldn't surprise me to see the Sox throw a ton of money at the guy. Dude's a 25 year old ace type. Those guys don't hit the market ever.

We're signing him. I'm calling it.

You can spread that money around so the real financial hit is in later years, when the Sox have very little committed in salary. I hope they do it.

It really doesn't matter what you sign the guy for, you'll make up the money you pay him two fold with TV rights and marketing in his country. You know how much money Seattle probably made on Ichiro? Same with Texas and Yu Darvish.

I took him to mean big money free agents, not just international ones.

As much as if love it to happen, I just don't see it. The money is one thing. Will Tanaka WANT to play here? Gotta realize that it is ultimately his choice. I imagine he'd rather play out on the West Coast. I hope I'm wrong.

In retrospect, I suppose the Sox are actually a decently big player in international free agents, even if we never got one of the big-name ones (except Contreras when the Yankees gave up on him).

On the amateur side, the international market used to be a free-for-all and we know how much the Sox hated spending money like that. It's a different game now, as seen with signings like Micker Zapata.

On the international free agent side, who was the first big one, Nomo? I can't think of any major ones, meaning big money, the Sox signed before Abreu.

Players they acquired after already coming over here is a different matter.

I like this. I think the Sox are very sincere, given that our management generally does not just merely window shop. It would be in keeping with the current strategy of getting younger and improving organizational depth at the same time.

The posting fee will actually be split into four payments over 18 months and can actually make this easier for the Sox to sign him.
Lets cross our fingers that he wants to join a young team with hopefully a bright future.

If the bidding is anywhere near the nine figures estimated, I can't see us being players, and I'm just fine with that scenario.

I wonder if it's a good sign that the Sox met with him today
White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said that the club had an "exploratory" meeting with Masahiro Tanaka on Thursday in LA
