Well there's something like 4M members so there's bound to be a few who understand sports.

Good post.

Default Frankly speaking

Great career and well deserved. Congratulations Big Frank Thomas.

And Greg Maddux gets in highlighting the cubs big blunder in trading him

White Sox +1 Big Hurt
cubs -1

Hoping that PK can squeak in there when his turn comes up.

The flubbies didn't trade Maddux. He rejected their higher offer in free agency to sign with the Braves because he felt the Braves had a better chance to win a championship.

I thought the Yankees offered more than the Braves, but both teams outbid the Cubs.

Can't blame him, as the Braves were much better and if I was a pitcher I would pick the NL over the AL any day, especially having already been familiar with the NL.

Right. And, it really wasn't about money. He wanted to win, and the Braves were coming off two straight World Series appearances. I want to say the Braves only gave him 500k more.

Perhaps it's interesting that he always stayed in the NL.

Given that it was Dave Kaplan I take it with a grain of salt, but he said yesterday that Maddux went to the Cubs GM at the last minute with an offer, but by then the Cubs had signed Guzman and Myers and Himes just wished him luck and bid him adieu.

Maddux was just asked about going to NY. He said that decision was close, but that the Braves were the best bet as a contender.

As I recall the flubbies offer was actually $1M higher over the same amount of years ($29M to $28M). Maybe the Braves upped their offer later, but that's as I remember it (cue Voodoo brainfart joke here).

I don't remember the exact details, but I do know money wasn't the reason why he left. The Cubs offered him a lot of money. He wanted to win, and even said that at his Cy Young award press conference. The Braves offered him a similar contract with a World Series contending team already in place.

Man, what would Maddux get now at that time in his career? $25 mil/yr?

I'd say so. Probably a little less than Kershaw will get, due to the (slight) age difference.

And I am one of them. Nicely done....good to see you spread the great news about The Big Hurt.

Congrats to Frank....my alltime favorite player...no doubt about it.

Well-deserving first ballot treatment...thanks for the memories, Frank!

Yeah, he got about 5.5 million for 5 years. He hit the market at age 26 coming off a Cy Young. Yeah, he would get slightly more than that if he hit the market today...

Hurt's so good!

Wow. So much for the BWAA's "no one gets in on the first ballot" crowd. I guess they realized that worthy players without the taint of PEDs are nothing to sneeze at nowadays.

Truly a proud day for the Sox faithful.

My comment on this is that the 4th ballot that Collins got in on was only the 4th year of Hall of Fame voting, so they were still going through a backlog of great players from before 1936 . Here's the guys that got in the three years ahead of him:

Ty Cobb
Honus Wagner
Babe Ruth
Christy Mathewson
Walter Johnson
Nap Lajoie
Tris Speaker
Cy Young
Grover C. Alexander
