Default SOX Injury Update

4.10
Avisail Garcia out for the season with a torn labrum in his left shoulder, scheduled to undergo surgery within the next week. X-rays yesterday at Coors Field were negative, but an MRI this morning at Rush University Medical Center revealed the torn labrum.

Nate Jones
has responded well after he had an MRI and epidural when the team discovered the injury is to his lower back.

Gordon Beckham
going to start swinging again today and hopefully work his way back into the lineup in the coming days. Currently dont have a timeframe on him.

Jeff Keppinger
played three innings in extended spring training on Wednesday and is progressing, should be in the lineup on Friday.
Hes working his way toward a rehab assignment but not quite there yet, Hahn said.

I thought Jones' injury was musculature, not structural like a herniated disk or anything. So, what does lower back mean? But the idea of en epidural sure is scary. I'm not sure what that does except numb the pain. Doesn't seem recuperative at all.

Depends what they injected into the epidural space and what the cause of the pain is. Injecting a steroid could treat both the symptoms and the cause (depending on the cause). It's not an uncommon choice of treatment for some forms of low back pain.

I'd really hate to see Semien or Leury Garcia lose their roster spot for Keppinger. I realize they will need to showcase Keppinger as being healthy to try to trade him but the Sox have to decide what is more important to them. Is getting something of value in return for Keppinger or the continued growth for young players like Semien or Leury Garcia worth more?

The only thing they'll ever get for Keppinger, almost no matter how well he plays, is rid of his salary. Beckham's a different story...he could bring something.
So the $6 million or whatever it is salary relief that we'll finally get if we move Keppinger isn't worth the at least 50/50 risk that he could really make the team worse.

Jones
didn't look comfortable walking around clubhouse. "No timetable until he's out throwing,'' Ventura said.

Beckham
played his first game at second base during his minor league rehab assignment with Double-A Birmingham.

Nate Jones
doesn't look good walking around. The more treatment he gets, it's sore," Ventura said. "It's a little more extensive than we first anticipated by just seeing him and what he mentioned when it first happened. Hopefully it starts getting better, but I don't think we anticipated it being this long."

Gordon
Beckham may finally be over oblique strain -- return by next week possible. Ventura: 'He’s been doing good. He's getting closer.'

Daryl Van Schouwen ‏@CST_soxvan 12h
Ventura saying that Paulino has talked of some 'soreness,' the door is open for a possible DL stint. He was signed for $1.75M

It's too bad I have about as much faith in Rienzo to be a rotation cog as I did Paulino. I certainly hope he or or Johnson can settle into roles as young supplements to this staff, but I just don't see it.

Paulino to the DL with an inflamed ERA. Unfortunately, no amount of rest is likely to relieve the condition.
