Default Ed Herrmann R.I.P....

Ed Herrmann, White Sox catcher in 1967 and then from 1969 through 1974 passed away this morning after a battle with cancer in San Diego.

I lost a friend and the White Sox family lost one of their own...I'll miss Ed's humor, his honesty and his great stories.

Here is a link to an interview I did with him a few years ago. Talked about his career and had some wonderful stories:

Will miss you "Hoggy."

He battled very hard but suffered way too much. Lifes end can be so very difficult. No more pain for Big Ed.

One of my great memories of Ed, to counteract the Big Red Machine of Cincinatti in 1970, Ed came up with the White Sox version.
He was what White Sox baseball is all about.
RIP Ed.

Herrmann was the best catcher I've ever seen at blocking the plate when a runner was trying to score at home plate. He had numerous collisions with the runners at home plate. The collisions didn't seem to bother him. He was one tough catcher.

When I was a little guy, my dad took me to my first Sox game. It seemed like the Cub game had taken me to (he was a Sox fan and felt I had to break in with the minor leagues) until Hermann went Yard. The fireworks went off and there was no turning back for me.

Ed was one of my first favorite Sox. I remember having a plastic mug that I used for hot chocolate when I was a kid that had about six or so Sox players' pictures on there and Ed was one of them.

My sympathies and prayers to his family. RIP, Ed.

Ed Herrmann

July 9, 1976, while with the Astros, Herrmann caught Larry Dierker's no-hitter against the Expos at the Astrodome and also went 2-for-3 with a home run in a 6-0 victory. On July 4, 1972, he was involved in turning three double plays against the Orioles, setting a record for the most by a catcher in a single game.

Back when I was about 10, Ed was the power hitter on a then powerless Sox team, so I wrote him a letter wanting to start a fan club for him. I was shocked when a few weeks later I got a letter back, he was very gracious and said that would be great!

RIP Ed, in your pics you had a Harley and played the part well I bet. Thanks for all you've given baseball fans

I feel the need to wear a black No. 12 armband.

Decades after being traded by the White Sox, his personalized California license plates proclaimed his affiliation with the team.

RIP Ed.... Learning how to play the position and wear the 'Tools Of Ignorance", you were one I oogled and tried to mimic on the ball field. Thanks for the memories of bustin ass on those "challenged" Pale Hose teams. Rest in Peace you big hearted guy...

Its always hard losing a loved one anytime, around Christmas even harder as I found out when my Dad died of cancer 30 yrs ago on December 13. Praying that Ed's family will be able to cope w/this.
