I listened to his interview of MLB radio, and he basically said that he's there to platoon with Dunn at DH....and he implied that he's also there to help the clubhouse.
I had hoped that Viciedo would platoon at DH with Dunn and that De Aza and Viciedo would platoon in Left Field. That would give us a bench bat. and we absolutely need a CF....we can't have no defense in that position for another season...no reason for that. Getting someone like the Cards got from the Angels would help (and I know he can't hit yet, but he sure can field).
anyway you slice it, we'll have one less body on the bench who can go out and play the field. I guess we won't have a 5th outfielder. Still hope we get a CF.

Okay, I'll play... How many of those people ahead of him played substantially less years. 15 years isn't that long of a career either. I mean it's plenty long but hardly remarkable.

Seriously though, opportunistic? You realize that word isn't even a backhanded complement, it's an insult.

Clearly everyone who plays 15 years should have over 430 HR, it's just a mere "counting stat".

I'm too dumb to look it up without spending a half hour searching, but I'd swear I saw somewhere that Paulie hit over .300 against lefties last year. If that is indeed the case, in an injury-plagued season, I see this working out quite well if he can stay healthy. Yes, the roster flexibility is down, but who knows? Maybe using Paul where he can be successful, and putting Dunn in there only where he is most likely to be successful, could work out great for us. Maybe Dunn does well enough with not facing lefties that we unload him at the deadline. And Paulie can help mold some of our young guys for the future. If they all show up for work and act like the pro Paulie is, we'll be reaping those benefits for a decade.

But this is WSI, so I hate the move.

By that logic, Frank Thomas didn't have a legitimate 500-home-run career.

You are correct, sir. As RHB vs. LHP (http://www.baseball-reference.com/pl...ear=Career&t=b):

This thread is comedy gold.

Here is my prediction:

To get him used to American Baseball, the Sox will have Abreu spend two months in Charlotte. When he comes up in late May/early June, the season will be 1/3 over. At that point, Dunn will be owed "only" 9.9M. Hahn can then shop him to someone who needs a lefty stick and ship the half his salary in the deal for two A prospects. If nobody takes him, the Sox might, for once, decide to eat Dunn's salary which is easier to eat than the full $15,000,000 and DFA him.

Think a feeble pop up is the worst thing that can happen to end Paulie's career with the Sox?

I don't want his last appearance with the Sox to involve him on the ground in agony over a wre
cked knee

Happy to have the WS05 hero and captain back, especially if it's a sign that they're going to dump Dunn. If they don't, then this signing only makes sense nostalgically, not strategically. I can see a healthy Paulie bouncing back, but not if he, Dunn, and Abreu are sharing 1B/DH.

Certainly the signing makes them worse in 2014. It's part of the plan I described here:
http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/v...&postcount=129

"The die-hards will appreciate the five-year plan and will still support the Sox. The bad contracts at least have recognizable names to pacify the few casual fans who might still come to the park. The Sox should replace them with less-expensive veterans who are more popular with the fans; they've historically done that a lot anyway. If they brought in, say, Buehrle then he would also eat innings and be a good mentor to younger players."

YAWN? I'd explain how ludicrous a comment that was, but it appears that everyone else already has.
