Personally, I think that any player is worth whatever team is willing to pay for him.
Sure. Obviously, I don't own the perspective of the Yankees, who can conceivably pay for the top talent at every position. But it seems to me that most teams should angle to pay for top talent at the most valuable offensive positions. It's true that Cano is one of the best hitters at his position. Indeed, his career slash line would be impressive at every damn position.

That's essentially my point. It doesn't matter what position you play: if you can put up numbers like Cano has, I think that that would justify getting at least $100 million, let alone $200 million.

I also look at it this way: look at the rest of the 2B around the league. Who else can approach those numbers? He would be a valuable asset to ANY team in MLB, and could potentially lead an offense...let alone that all you would need to do is surround him with slightly-above-average-to-good players and you would have a VERY good team.

Cano is the most valuable player on the market, and he knows it. To ask for what he's asked for isn't that outlandish, and if standard negotiating tactics apply, he'll come down from his original number some before inking a deal.

With McCann locked in that long, I wonder if this improves our chances to trade for Gary Sanchez?

For once I'd love to see the Sox go after the semi-annual Yankee prospect dump.

Yeah, but this is the Yankees. What's another $17M/year contract to them?

As a lefty he should also thrive at Yankee Stadium.

The Cardinals need to be more realistic about the value of past their prime shortstops!

Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeymanCBS

Cano's $260M request leaves about a $100M gap with #yankees, who appear to be looking around.

Cano's request was for a nine-year deal that is believed to include a 10th-year vesting option to bring it to $260 million.

The Yankees also have a two-year offer out to free-agent outfielder Carlos Beltran, who'd they like as their right fielder.

Jon Morosi ‏@jonmorosi
As @LaVelleNeal reported, Twins are staying in contact with free agent A.J. Pierzynski, source confirms. Need a catcher with Mauer to 1B.

Twins sign Ricky Nolasco and Phil Hughes. These are pretty reasonable signings for them.

Something's a-brewing in Detroit. That or Scherzer is gonna get way overpaid.

Thought the Tigers would do better for Fister. Marginal top tier Nationals prospect, utility man and a decent reliever doesn't seem like enough.
