Default Cardinals Deal Freese for Angels Bourjos

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/10...s-david-freese

Tough losing 2 potential trade targets like this!

That stings.

Chris Young went to the Mets. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/1...ris-young.html

Great move by Los Angeles, bad move by the Cardinals

EDIT - I guess Freese is a little older than I thought he was (30), though Bourjos will be 27 by Opening Day.
That is my first thought but then again I can't really remember the last time the Cardinals made a bad move. At least not off the top of my head.

My Cardinal fan friends are pretty optimistic about the move because Freese was expected to lose his job this upcoming season so the Cardinals could move Matt Carpenter to 3B (his natural position) and promote Kolten Wong to everyday 2B. So I guess if Wong pans out as expected it's, at worst, a lateral move for St. Louis, I just really think that this is a lot to give up to a no-bat utility outfielder. But I guess that's what the Cardinals really need.

I know this is the minority view but I actually like this deal a lot more for Texas than for Detroit. Fielder is 29, two years younger than Kinsler. And Kinsler's production has fallen off for the past two years. I know that Fielder's home runs dropped a bit last year to 25 but he still drove in 106 runs and hit .279 in a "down year." He has driven in 100+ runs in 6 of the past 7 years.

Consider this: because Detroit threw $30 million into the deal, Texas is getting a 29 year old Fielder for 7 years at $138 million and Detroit is get a 31 year old Kinsler for 4 years at $69 million. In terms of finances and production, I like the Texas side of the deal better than the Detroit side.

Fielder had the worst season of his career last year. I think it's a bit early to write him off as a failure going forward. Is it really that hard to imagine him hitting 35+ HR in Arlington next year?

McCann to the Yankees 5 year/$85 mil with an option for a 6th year with a full no trade clause. Reported by Heyman.

Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal

McCann is in agreement with #Yankees, pending physical.
Average salary of $17M for McCann with #Yankees highest for free-agent catcher. Mauer's $24M average highest overall.
Source: McCann deal with #Yankees is 5/85 with sixth-year vesting option that could bring it to 6/100.

The Texas Rangers were in on McCann until the end. The Red Sox expressed interest but were uncomfortable with a deal of that length.

I wonder if that contract will be a big mistake for the Yankees, McCann has had some injury concerns the last couple years and has slightly declined.

Did the Yankee's really need to make that move? Seems like doing something just for the sake of doing it. I wonder where that puts them in regards to Cano negotiations now.

Then again, who the hell else do they have on that team? Are they going to sign Granderson now? Surely McCann, Granderson and Cano would be quite the productive offseason for them, but it's hard to see that happening.

With J-honny and McCann now signed, can we all stop talking contract craziness and just realize what the market is? You have to spend, and not every deal can be a bad one.

If you're considering the Yankee bankroll holistically (which one never should) it means that they are divested $100 mil from ever matching Cano's demand for a ludicrous $300 mil contract. IMO, offering a $200 Million contract to a second baseman is still ridiculous no matter how productive he is offensively.

Why? Also, are starting pitchers worth that much? 1B? 3B? C?

Personally, I think that any player is worth whatever team is willing to pay for him.
