MLB radio was talking about the "issue" of stats this evening, what are the important, essential stats. Have we gone overboard with all of the new stats.
I'm an old school guy, but I've got no problem with incorporating new stats into my enjoyment of the game. What's frustrating is this: I've been around long enough to know what a good ERA, or batting average, or RBI total or hit total is, but with the new array of stats what is good? Obviously, by and large, higher is better, but where is the new Mendoza line with .obp, with ops, with slug etc. etc., and what are all-star level?
It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. - A.
