Failed gamble is failed gamble. Wouldn't be the first time.

Belisario needs to go next. Pitching just isn't his forte. It happens. I really thought he'd be the first one gone.

I'd love to see Viciedo traded for some value, but it would be hard. He doesn't field well, and is a sporadic hitter. Not a lot of teams looking for someone like that.

Getting anything at all back for Viciedo would be a small victory. If a trade can't be made, then it's not a big deal. I don't really care how he ends up leaving, just as long as he isn't on this team next year.

That was expected on Paulino.

We may need to wait a bit on other roster cuts since the non-tender deadline is usually the first week of December.

Paulino was the only club option for 2015 that needed to be resolved. You're right; things will be quiet until the non-tender deadline.

That guy started the second game of the season for us. He wasn't that good to begin with, so I have no idea what made Hahn believe that he would be even mediocre after Tommy John surgery. Counting on him to fill out the rotation was not a good gamble. If you're going to aim for a mediocre starting pitcher, at least get someone who's healthy.

He had put up a 3.55 ERA in 28 games (27 starts) with KC over 2011/12 before he got injured, so they must've thought he'd figured something out.

I can only assume that having KC's terrific defense behind him is what helped him keep his H/9 well below his career average. But given the relative uncertainty of the back-end of the Sox rotation coming into the year it wasn't necessarily a terrible idea.

Exactly. If all went well, he would have eaten some innings in a rebuilding year at a low cost, and if he did look good out there, then there was an option for 2015. In other words, he would have done what Hector Noesi ended up doing.

Trade Viciedo for dom Brown - change of scenery trade.

I've heard of "change of scenery" moves in an attempt to revitalize a dormant bat, but would a "change of scenery" move allow either of these butchers to develop a passable defensive game? I highly doubt it.
