How would the Crain deal work? Since he is on the DL.

Jane Lee
reports that the A's aren't willing to part with pitchers Dan Straily and Sonny Gray, or shortstop Addison Russell, Oakland's 2012 No. 1 Draft pick -- names mentioned as players Chicago covets - and they'd need the White Sox to absorb most of Peavy's owed salary.

Jayson Stark
tweeted that the Sox aren't willing to absorb any of the salary owed to Peavy, and that combined with health concerns is making Peavy a tougher sell.

The way they described it on ESPN last night, it is like a performance based contract. If he pitches x number of games this season you get players off of the A list, if he pitches y number of games you get players off of the B list, if he doesn't pitch at all, you get nothing.

Jeff Passan@JeffPassan1m
Sources: Deal for Jesse Crain to Rays not close to done. Talks for now. Good news for White Sox is teams aren't scared off by his shoulder.

Default Crain to be traded after all?

I don't post a lot here, so I'm not sure about the rules on posting trade rumors, but Bruce Levine at ESPN Chicago is saying that a Crain trade is close to being done despite his current injury status.

Levine said the deal involves the Rays and another undisclosed team.

I wonder what return they will get considering the injury questions. I don't think they were going to get the big return a lot of Sox fans seemed to be expecting, but it will be interesting to see if it's any better than what they received in the Thornton deal.

EDIT:

Jeff Passan says it's not close to done, but talks are happening. Good news that the injury isn't hindering teams' interest:

I'm guessing the deal would be conditional on his being healthy and active by a certain date. If he is we get player A, if not we get player B, etc...

Man, it's tough to swallow all of this bull**** in one sitting. Teams are calling us about Jake Peavy, but they don't like him because he's an injury risk, and they want the Sox to pay most of his salary, and they don't want to give up anything of value for him. Right. You either want him, or you don't. If you do, do some ****ing business instead of trying to bull**** your way into some ripoff deal. If you don't, get off the ****ing phone already.

Maybe the Rays would also want Keppinger back. Maddon seemed to love the guy.

Crain was seen handing out envelopes to clubhouse workers at U.S. Cellular Field after Sunday's final home game. Players typically tip home clubhouse workers at the end of the season.

It's called negotiating. The seller starts out high and the buyer starts out low. One side will cave, or they'll meet in the middle. We can only assume that's what is going on here. Plus there's still two days to get something done.

Personally, I'm glad that Hahn is asking for a lot and playing hardball with these guys. That being said, I'd still be pretty disappointed if something doesn't happen between now and Wednesday.

FYI - there is a thread over at What's the Score that is covering all the Sox trade rumors.

Sometimes competition will change the dynamics. Boston, unfortunately took 2 out of 3 in Baltimore this weekend. So maybe Peavy looks more appealing to Orioles than Red Sox. Boston has a big game with Rays in Boston tonight---- a rainout from last week's series that Rays already took 2 out of 3. Yankees are still treading water. So Boston, New York or Baltimore may change their priority by the deadline. Hopefully one or more get desperate and overpay.
If Pujols is out, maybe Cards see Rios ( or even better Dunn or Paulie) in a different light.

Pujols is on the Angels and it's unlikely they're buyers this deadline

True, but maybe the Blue Jays can package Rios with someone like Bautista or John Olerud.

Saw the headline and forgot where he was. Just saw Jayson Stark thinks Rios stays

ALEX RIOS. Teams in touch with the White Sox report they've asked for two top prospects, plus a "lesser" player, for Rios, without much luck. So at this point, it wouldn't be a shock to see the White Sox pull Rios back and put him on the market again this winter.
