Mark Gonzales
Veal optioned, Omogrosso up. Chicago White Sox White Sox have optioned LHP Donnie Veal (@RealDVeal) to @KnightsBaseball & recalled RHP Brian Omogrosso. Omogrosso will wear uniform No. 48. |

Well, Veal wasn't getting it done. Let's see if Omogrosso can.

Yikes. There has to be better pitching for us in the minors than swapping Veal for Omogrosso.

He's the last arm in the bullpen, Omogrosso is perfectly well suited for the role

Nate Jones isn't getting us very excited, either.

Both he and Jones have regressed. How much of this (if any) falls on Cooper?

Standard sophomore slump? Their expectations were really high coming in. Or perhaps what we saw last season was just way over their true potential.

Bullpen pitchers are just volatile by nature. Finding a stable dependable left handed specialist is even more of a challenge. Not sure how much of that falls on Coop. I'm sure other good pitching coaches like Mike Maddux have to deal with it as well.

Veal is 28 years old has had some injuries and been kickin around in the minors since his non impressive debut in 2009 with Pittsburgh. This is no shock that he went south this year and it is very probable that he will never to be heard from again.

Relievers are highly volatile from year to year....even veteran pitchers. As management you have to count on some regression into your team performance.

Agreed, plus, it's not like Jones was all that great last year anyway. His personal numbers looked fine, but when you're a relief pitcher, allowing 45% of your inherited runners to score is unacceptable.

Bullpen pitchers have always been a dime a dozen. Anyone remember Pollite and Cotts? Both were awesome in 2005. After that? Forget it. You just have to hope a couple of them catch fire for you.

Pretty much. It sucks that it has to be this way, but it's pretty much a rule of thumb most bullpen guys don't stick with the same team, or even in the same role, forever. Thornton is a rare exception.
