Guys...I'm not talking about that he almost signed with them as I read the story they said the Sox signed him then almost traded him to Toronto. That's different, anyway you slice it.

Unless I'm misreading, it seems like the Sox barely entertained the idea of trading him, and were just a little curious as to whether they could do better than a compensatory pick.

It sounds like the idea was that they would pick up his option (not signing him to the new deal) and then trade him to Toronto, who was ready to pay him the $22 million.

The fact that the new deal bought out the option and signed for less than expected probably made it more attractive to keep him.

Jake definitely took a discount to stay here. He said as much. I think if he were to agree to a sign (or extend) and trade, he would have asked for near market value. Not just because he didn't have any loyalty to the Jays, but because Canada has a much higher tax rate.
