Default NL Wild Card race

Don't look now, but the Cardinals are only 2 1/2 games behind the Braves, who have been in the driver's seat basically all year. What's happened to them?

They have destroyed their bullpen by overpitching the young guys. Vinters, Krimbel and O Flahrey(sp?) are 3 of the top 4 in relief innings pitched at 77, 76 and 74 respectively. They are paying for it now.

Major sidebar here that could concern the White Sox.

If everything we have read both in Chicago and nationally is correct that while JR would not want to fire Ozzie he will let the GM decide.

Most national writers seem to think the White Sox will let Ozzie go to Miami and in turns paves the way for LaRussa to come back after 25 years.

Would KW even want Tony? Well he is well aware the Chairman and LaRussa are close friends.

But if the Cards make the playoffs it will make it that much harder for Tony to leave.

Not to mention, ATL has a harder schedule left(2 @ FLA, 3 @ WASH, 3 vs PHI), than STL(3 vs Mets, Cubs, 3 @ HOU).

I don't think that would be the best of decisions to bring Tony in. While he doesn't quite have the "foot-in-mouth" syndrome that Ozzie has, his ego is just as big, if not bigger. I think KW would butt heads with LaRussa just as much as he has with Ozzie. If I were them, I would pass if the opportunity ever presented itself.

An incredible strain on a pitcher's arm. Fire the manager.

The king of empty stats is stifling the Braves, while the Cards take an early lead on the Mets. This should get interesting.

Jurrjens and Hansen have spend significant time on the DL, and Lowe is having a very bad year; I'm amazed that the pen held up for as long as it did. I went to the game on Sunday: all the pitchers looked exhausted from Beachy to Kimbrel. Add the fact that the bats have been pretty silent all year (is Heward a bust?) and you have a recipe for a classic September meltdown.

I'd love to see some October baseball at the Ted, but I just don't think they have anything left in the tanks.

Braves lost again tonight, Cardinals were losing 4-2 in the 8th in Houston, but with 2 men on Lance Berkman comes up with a huge 2-run double to tie it.

Could both wild card races be tied tonight?

So much for the lack of a race this month.

How would MLB handle 2 tie-breakers on the same night? Would TBS pick up one of them and the MLB Network the other?

I would bet TBS would have both. One at 4pm. One at 7 or 8pm

Cardinals tied it in the 9th, but blow it in extras.

Braves still up 1 game.
