Not a bad pick by Detroit. Relieved it wasn't Allie.

Any chance Allie is there at 63?

It's possible. I'm surprised he lasted past the supplemental round. His demands must be crazy.

How the heck do the Angels score 5 first round picks??? Losing Figgins? What a first-rate organization the Angels are.
And Tampa - who'd they lose in free agency to warrant themselves several? That's got to be part of our minor league woes...not working the system and getting all of these picks. Last edited by Tragg; 06-07-2010 at 10:20 PM. |

The Rays would have had the 17th overall pick based on last year's standings. They acquired the 31st pick in the 1st round when LeVon Washington, their 1st round selection in 2009 didn't sign. Their Sandwich Round pick came because they lost Type B Free Agent Gregg Zaun to the Brewers this offseason.

I forgot about Lackey. I didn't realize you get such a high pick for a type B. |

Which brings up something. If the Sox can't get much for guys like Paulie, Putz, Jenks and AJ, would it be better to keep those guys, let them walk and get the picks? Resigning Paulie for 2 more years would also work, but just speculating.

To get compensation picks for an FA, they have to be offered and decline salary arbitration (not 100% sure how that process works, but I think at least, you're on the hook for a 1-year-deal that cannot be worth less than 80% of the salary he was just making). That's the caveat, to earn these extra picks, you have to run the risk of these guys believing they can do better on the open market, and considering how unfriendly free agency has been to some vets the last few years, it's debatable whether or not the Sox would offer arbitration to Konerko or AJ. Jenks, on the other hand, is not eligible to be a free agent until after the 2011 season. If he's not traded, the only way he doesn't come back next year is if the Sox don't even tender him a contract which, of course, does not earn you compensation draft picks.

FutureSox prospect profile on Chris Sale:
http://bit.ly/9yRyzd Really pleased with the pick. When guys like Loux started going top 10 you knew someone good would drop to the Sox. I had Chris Sale top 5 on my draft board with Grandal at 7 and McGuire at 8. Now hopefully they can get the job done on day 2. I like Workman as a possibility if he drops. Bryan Harper (Bryce's brother) is one I know the Sox like so watch out for him in the 4-7 round range. |
