BA's Sox Top 10 Prospects

I don't see how Borchard was rushed, unless you think he needed another year at Birmingham instead of being moved to Charlotte in '02. He was just an AAAA player; raked at AAA every time, but just couldn't hit major league quality pitching.

Borchard is only 29. He hasn't been given enough time to prove that he can hit major league pitching.

You know that you can't judge these deals until all players have been retired for atleast 5 years.

The A's like people who walk. They develop guys to take walks. IMO, Borchard would have been better off had he been in the A's system. I remember hearing that the A's would thrive their minor leaguers to take however many walks or suffer the consequences. That has to put a lot of patience and discipline into a hitter, which would have helped Borchard.

When, exactly, did Borchard rake at AAA?

He was a AA player.

Yeah I'm wrong about saying "every time", but he put up .266/.333/.495 in '04 to convince the Sox to call him up and .355/.452/.711 in '07 to convince the Marlins to call him up.

His 2004 numbers were not what I'd call "raking". He was a 25 year old farmhand in a hitter's park, and his .827 OPS was worse than 2B Bryant Nelson, SS Bobby Smith, and C Ryan Hankins, all of whom had at least as many at-bats. He was only called up because Magglio got hurt; he didn't hit his way to Chicago.

His 2007 numbers were as a 28 year old in one of the best hitter's parks in all of baseball (Albuquerque), and in only 76 at-bats.

The guy went from college to a nearly 900 OPS AA season in his first full year of pro ball and followed that up with an .850 OPS in AAA the next year, That made him quite the prospect. What happened after that and why is certainly a point that can be argued, but he was quite the prospect after those 2001 and 2002 seasons.

Jim Callis in his chat revises the top 4 as follows in light of recent events: Beckham, Viciedo, Poreda, Flowers. He says he may put Lillibridge right in front of Getz. He puts Gilmore and Rodriguez in the 11-30 range. In two years we've already revamped our farm system.

Speaking of prospects, Dexter Carter and Tyler Kuhn were selected for the Topps Short-Season/Rookie All-Star Team. Whatever that means.
