Upchurch is 6'4" and just 180, and he won't be 19 years old till September, so he has a lot of upside. His ERA is 1.38, with 23 strikeouts in 26 innings, just 7 walks, and only 17 hits allowed. They've eased him into the starting role after 3 relief appearances.

What is the difference between Bristol and Great Falls? My impression is Great Falls has better prospects, as far as the Sox go, but that may be wrong. Is either league considered better?

I thought I heard Great Falls is like the Advanced Rookie Ball, so higher/tougher than Bristol.

They are officially considered to be the same level Adv-R, but in practice the Pioneer League tends to get older prospects and college players with the Appy League getting quite a few players in their first year of pro ball. (Like Upchurch and first overall pick Tim Beckham.) The exceptions are that the Braves and Twins both send their advanced prospects there, which is why those two organizations win the Appy every year.

I loved the Upchurch pick, probably my favourite of the whole draft. Three potential plus pitches from a 12th rounder, hell yes!

Great Falls is where the Sox send their older or more experienced players at that level. Bristol is generally where the most raw, the youngest HS and Latin American prospects are sent. They work more on fundamentals at Bristol than Great Falls.
