Default 2017/2018 White Sox off-season thread

I thought I'd start this thread with this bit of news. Joe McEwing will interview for the Tigers open manager position. Link here.

Sox also re-signed Ynoa to a minor league deal.

Well...SOMEONE has to pitch, assuming he even makes the team.

Sox made a number of roster moves Monday to fill out the 40-man
Quote:
10/2/17 Chicago White Sox activated RHP Jake Petricka from the 10-day disabled list.
10/2/17 Chicago White Sox activated RHP Nate Jones from the 10-day disabled list.
10/2/17 Chicago White Sox activated LHP Carlos Rodon from the 10-day disabled list.
10/2/17 Chicago White Sox activated CF Leury Garcia from the 10-day disabled list.
10/2/17 Chicago White Sox recalled RHP Brad Goldberg from Charlotte Knights.
10/2/17 Chicago White Sox recalled OF Ryan Cordell from Charlotte Knights.
10/2/17 Chicago White Sox recalled RHP Tyler Danish from Charlotte Knights.
10/2/17 Chicago White Sox recalled CF Jacob May from Charlotte Knights.
The interesting one to me is activating Rodon from the 10-day disabled list. They left Soto, Putnam, and Tilson on the 60-day and it would seem like Rodon is an obvious candidate for the 60-day to free up a slot on the 40-man ahead of the Rule 5 draft. Perhaps they'll do that later. Also interesting that neither Tilson or Putnam was activated even though Tilson has been "cleared for baseball activities" in Arizona.

If i'm not mistaken, there is no "DL" during the offseason. Soto was signed to a 1 year deal so he won't take up a roster space. Once Tilson and Putnum come off the dl, they will take the remaining 2 roster spots, leaving the Sox with a full 40 man roster.

Ok, I figured there was some intricacy to the roster rules I didn't know. But why did they do it with some of the guys but not others?

Maybe the White Sox didn't actually have to formally do anything with the recalls and activations from the 10-day dl. Players on the 60-day dl do not count against the 40 man roster and a corresponding roster move would need to be made if a team had a full 40-man roster. The 60-day dl may not expire until the off-season officially begins the day after the world series ends.

The White Sox outrighted the following players today:

Rob Brantley
Rymer Liriao
David Holmberg
Chris Volstad
Brad Goldberg

Brantley, Liriano, Holmberg and Volstad will become free agents and Goldberg remains property of the White Sox orginization.

The 40-man roster stands at 33 after these moves.

But Brantly hit a home run against Cleveland! I thought he was the future?

I'm much more content with Narvaez and Smith until Collins is ready.

I hope Brantley resigns with Charlotte. He's perfectly good as that reserve guy that can fill in briefly if someone goes down or provide days of rest in September. He's no more than that but he is perfectly fine in that role.

I can't find anything here to complain about.

I am skeptical that Goldberg will ever be useful at the major league level, though.

Now that the World Series is over, it'll be interesting to see what moves the Sox make this offseason. They likely won't top last offseason's blockbuster trades, but there are some decisions to make nonetheless.

It'll be interesting to see what they do with Abreu and Avisail this offseason. Both are up for arbitration this year and will be FAs after 2019.

My gut take:

Abreu gets his last big contract. Thinking that he makes somewhere like...4-5 years (with perhaps some options in there), 80 million+. Yeah, those last few years of the deal will probably suck, but I'm adamant that he needs to be kept around to help the younger kids, at the very least.

Aviasil goes to arbitration for one more year to prove that last year wasn't a fluke. If he puts up numbers close to last year or better, then he gets a contract as well.
