Remember you're dealing with the ego's of the players AND the agents themselves. And these guys have some big ones. They want that record breaking deal, they want that 300 million and again, their ego's are still calling the shots here until reality sets in.

That has nothing to do with who offered it. He is hoping that somehow a team will raise their offer. It's that simple yet people rather spew their own agendas.
He's also holding out hoping Harper signs first which might expand the number of teams willing to throw money at him and give him a price point to leverage for teams who want to go lower.

Of course Harper is doing the same thing...

I think that is the far biggest thing in play here - the game of chicken between these 2 players.

They were talking about this on MLB Hot Stove this morning. All indications are that the interest between Harper and his hometown Giants is mutual, and is a preference for Harper where he can get a lot of money. Which is really good news for Machado as all the other must have "one" teams will run up his cost.

On the other side of the equation - the Machado must accept reality side - Mark Palishuk addressed this notion in last nights MLBTR chat. He said there are rumblings that Machado might be willing to lower his cost - but that's more an indication of his lack of enthusiasm for joining the teams currently in the running (which would include us). He says that while Machado might be willing to accept less than that pie in the sky amount, he won't be doing that for a losing team. FWIW.

Yup, completely agree.
Which really should not cause anyone to say that the Sox need to outbid themselves because no one wants to play for them.

Wasn't Harper born and raised in Las Vegas?

I can imagine a scenario where Machado come back with a lower counter and suddenly a deal gets done, maybe in the 7/$220 range.
I wouldn't have been so "flighty" with the offer considering the shape of the org. And I wouldn't have wasted assets on Manny's buddies either. Cut back on the investment in geriatric ward and put it into real talent.
But Hahn's approach may work out in the end...lord I hope so.

The "geriatric ward" in this case can all be DFA tomorrow if necessary and it won't hurt the Sox in any way. The simple fact is they don't have players those guys are stealing time for anyway, so meh... NBD...

It's about the equivalent of saying Chicago is your hometown when you are from Nashville

To be fair, the west coast is different because it’s so spread out. And they don’t have their own MLB team so it may be that a lot of kids growing up in Vegas root for the Giants, as it’s one of the closest teams. I have no clue if Harper did so.

Another possibility: Machado knows the Sox offer isnít going away. They may have even told him so. In fact, they may have told them that they are willing to match other offers from other teams. So if Machado waits, he could get a higher offer from another team, that the Sox will then match or beat. So even if he wants to play for the Sox, he doesnít have much incentive to sign yet, as heís not going to lose anything by waiting.

Maybe I misheard. That's weird, I could of swore they said that. Maybe he just rooted for them as a kid.

They spent $13 million and a prospect on these 1-2 WAR players (1-2 WAR IF these 30+ year olds improve from last year). That money could be put to more productive use. But if they help get Manny, all is well.

Money shouldn't matter as we have a very small payroll. Neither guy is blocking a better option. And Alex Call...calling him a prospect is being very generous. His better scout grades were on the defense side (60 arm in some reports), but his hit grade is 45 and he has no power. He's a defensive sub/fourth outfielder.

If we don't sign Machado, and the plan is to be as bad as possible and get a high draft pick - then these guys hurt us. But we could also trade them at the deadline for a lot more than Alex Call back. I like these moves regardless of Machado.
