Default Dane Dunning

For those of you who do not have an Athletic sub and are locked behind a paywall, I am sorry. I cannot recommend subbing enough, though; worth every penny.

For those that do have an Athletic sub, do you ever get this sneaking suspicion that the Sox may have found the RHP version of Mark Buehrle? Doesn't throw fast, but gets you to ground out all the time? And do you have no problem with this like I do?

I get the feeling they may have won 2/3rds of the Eaton trade, easy. Eaton's good, but is he worth 2 if not 3 MLB pitchers? Provided in what I'm seeing with Basabe, Adolfo, and other "throw-ins" in these trades and lower-round draft picks, I get a little bit o' hope.

The Eaton trade wasn't just Eaton for 3 pitchers. It was 4 years of control of Eaton (2-3 of which the Sox would not have been contending) for, what, 18 or so total years of control for those 3 pitchers?

I found this as sm interesting quote in the Athletic story Fegan wrote about Dunning:

“I threw a curveball my whole entire life, until I got to college,” Dunning said. “As soon as I got to college, my college coach told me to punt the curveball and focus on the slider. He worked with me a little bit in throwing the slider. I never threw a single curveball in college, only slider. As soon as I got to pro ball with the Nationals, they wanted me back to curveball, so that’s what I did. Last year I worked, I threw it and it was alright. This year [James] Shields helped me out a lot and I feel like it’s been really good.”

Dunning isn’t throwing a 68 mph “Slow Boy” like Shields, but the veteran showed him a grip that he feels frees his hand up to generate more spin on the pitch. As a result, he now has a pretty firm template for handling hitters of either hand.

I've said in the past that Shields has been and will continue be a good mentor to the team's young pitchers and this typifies it. Shields is not the same pitcher he was 10 years ago, but he's smart, competitive, knows how to pitch, and the mechanics of pitching. I think he'll make a very good pitching coach one day.

As for Dunning, you have to like any pitcher who throws strikes and throws effectively. Speed is not the end all, be all. Dunning will eventually be a starter in the Sox rotation, and I think a good one.

He's moved up MLB.com's Pipeline list, so that's certainly encouraging.

Yep, he moved up 15 spots on the list:

Dunning got promoted to AA a couple of weeks ago and seems to be doing well after his first 3 starts for Birmingham.

Also, its early, but Tatis has been TERRIBLE this year. Maybe everyone can calm down there a little.

He was terrible at the beginning of last year too, I think it's because he's so much younger than everyone else at that level. My guess is that he'll pick it up eventually and the bellyaching can resume.

Lol. You know it's going to happen. Hell, I might be leading the charge. None of these players are close to finished products - not Moncada, Jimenez, Kopech, Robert, etc. They're all going to struggle which is why I'm not freaking out (yet) about Giolito or Fulmer as disappointing as they've been.

It is way premature, IMO, to predict a ceiling of back of the rotation. Same for Fulmer. Both of these guys are learning on the job and the results are going to be mixed.

I hope that when Kopech comes up and inevitably struggles for stretches, the fans show him a little patience.

I realize that Giolito was part of the same deal in which the Sox also acquired Dunning, but aren't there already enough threads in the Clubhouse where Giolito's struggles have been exhaustively documented among all of the legitimate complaints about this year's major league squad? Why do we have to add another steaming pile to a thread literally named DANE DUNNING in the MINOR OBSERVATIONS forum?

For the record, I'm pleased with Dunning's progress. If he continues this performance in Birmingham, put him in Charlotte in 2019 and in Chicago in 2020.

I agree, but it’s too twisted up to split. If you want me to close it and start over I can.

I just wanted to call out the off-topic negativity. There are plenty of places to be negative about the major league players; a thread about the good performances of one prospect is decidedly not that place.
Agreed!

Glad to see Dunning get that early season promotion to AA. Hopefully he continues making good progress all the way up to Chicago.

Well, I needed to do some weight training today, so I did the heavy lifting and moved all the Giolito posts to the Giolito thread.

Please direct all comments about Giolito to the thread about him from now on.
