Really unfortunate news for Burdi. This is why you stockpile talent. If any pitcher was to go on the shelf, I'm more content with it being that of a future reliever than starter. Here's to hoping for a quick recovery.

Losing Burdi to Tommy John surgery hurts. But he is still young at 22 so even taking the time for recovery leaves him at normal prospect age. Nate Jones on the other hand is over 30 and running out of time before natural decline occurs anyhow.

I view Burdi as a key piece of the rebuild slotting into the closer role with overwhelming stuff. Hopefully this still happens.

Reality is though that you stock pile prospects because some of them get hurt and never reach their potential, some of them never develop into it, some of them never make it out of the minors because of a hole in their game they can't figure out how to overcome and some become productive but not overwhelming major leaguers.

The Sox are stacked with pitching prospects so that is good. Losing Burdi doesn't change that. They are still stacked.

I'd like to see more though and particularly more position prospects and lefties because you can never have too much.
