Correct. Anyone on the roster who is able to throw 100+ pitches needs to be throwing 100+ pitches. Moving Shields to the bullpen does nothing to help the team.

Not sure what trade value he will have at this year's deadline (1.5 years of control).
Abreu may be the best available power bat on the market this summer. A Quintana-like return is not realistic, but maybe Abreu packaged with Soria could fetch a package close to what the Yankees gave up for Robertson/Frazier/Kahnle?

So what happens when Rodon and Kopech are with the team later this summer? Fulmer goes to the pen if everyone is healthy?

That would depend on his progress and whether Giolito finds his groove. Either one of them can be sent back down which would be smarter than moving them to the pen, IMO. But they can always trade Shields for a bag of bSeballs or cut him and wish him well. At that point the money won’t be an issue anymore anyway.

I think we would get a 6-man rotation. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Kopech works out of the bullpen when he first gets here as part of a plan to limit his innings and get him to throw off as many different major league mounds as possible. The team has done this with pitching prospects in the past.

Once Rodon and Kopech enter the rotation, I say we roll with all five young starters in the rotation, and then keep Shields and Santiago (and Gonzalez if he’s healthy) in the pen for long relief. Who cares about bullpen roles? They just need to eat innings. So if Fulmer only goes three, have Shields pitch five, and then go to one more reliever for the ninth.

Not if he's pitching well.
Send Gonzalez or Shields to the pen (or to DFA land).

If that is all anyone is offering, I would rather keep him.

Agreed. The guy is an automatic 30/100 rbi guy, and I refuse to swap him for nothing.

Those 30 homers and 100 RBI likely will mean nothing in 2019, and then Abreu will no longer be under our control.

I sure as hell wouldn’t mind having another prospect with Blake Rutherford’s upside. I’m willing to give up Abreu’s short-term contract—one that doesn’t line up with our competitive window—to make it happen.

This team hasn’t even begun its upward trajectory into respectability yet. Adding young talent at the expense of established talent should still be done whenever the opportunity presents itself.

Yes. What a shame Avi is turning out to be who we thought he was.

So let him walk for nothing? I get what you’re saying, but it sounds more emotional than not.
