Default Angels claim Kevan Smith

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/...white-sox.html

I guess that's one way of clearing up the small logjam behind the plate.

I didn't realize that they waived him. He was okay for what he was. .348 OBP -the best of the guys that they waived.
They have some young guys they have to protect.

I liked how he spelled Kevin with an a.

Yep, Smith turns 31 next June. They'll have Navarez and Castillo next season. Also, they'll need to add Zavala to the 40-man this winter (if this already hasn't been done) to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.

Good luck in Anaheim, Kevan.

They probably have a bunch of others who need protection. I hope they move Castillo along and trade him as well.
The Sox have an overload of guys who can excel on the bottom 20% of a lot of rosters...I suspect we'll see a lot of guys they end up cutting getting claimed.

Smith was one of the smartest players on a dumb team. I'm not sure how you let him go.

Castillo, Navarez and two kids rapidly moving up in the minors who have tons of potential and in two years will probably be the #1 and #2 catchers on the team. Only room for so many and with Castillo's contract he isn't going anywhere (plus supposedly he's a friend of Machado's...)

Not only that, he's a 31 year old backup catcher.

I doubt he even sticks with the Angels.

They could have just waived Castillo...he was the worst of the 3. Still could. I guess he's the one most likely to become trade bait in July, for whatever that's worth.

Yeah. I don't know why they stuck out the suspension.

He adds zero value during that time and when he came back he added very little value.

He's pretty much worthless and he claimed he didn't even know what he took to get suspended.

He should probably find out so he doesn't take it again.

I don't think he's worthless. Suspension or no, catchers who can hit are a valuable commodity, so there's always the chance you can flip him for something, particularly since he's in a contract year.

Castillo being on the roster is a pretty small part of Smith being let go anyway. As people have said, a 31 year old with 500 below average ABs is pretty expendable when you have two solid prospects in the high minors at the same position and his main competition (Narvaez) was arguably a top 5 or 6 hitter in the league at the position.
