Rotation wise - they might be the only team trying to complete that's in worse shape than us. Unless you want to live in Anaheim, there's really not a competitive draw there over here.

As has been observed on many occasions, JR does not approach FA the same way LAAAAAA does. I’m sincerely wondering why LAAAAA didn’t go beyond what the Nats and NYY offered, given their willingness to spend on that level.

But look at what they did when they lost out on that bidding war. They acted, and they acted swiftly. When Wheeler signed with the Phillies, we just sat there sulking again.
With the willingness to spend money in that fashion, why wouldn’t LAAAA go beyond what NYY offered Cole? Even NYY has to have a limit.

The action LAAAAA took after not acquiring the 3 top FA pitchers didn’t do anything to improve their biggest weakness. In fact, spending that kind of money on Rendon will make it more difficult to acquire the pitching needed to compete for a playoff spot (much like the Pujols contract made it more difficult to outbid the Nats or NYY). That is unless they have an unlimited budget, in which case they should have just signed either (or both) Stras and Cole.

None of which makes them “pretty good” for next season.

Neither of us made that comment.

Top heavy.

Jimenez>the gimmick. 29 teams dont have trout and what has that done for them even when Pujols was > Rendon? Let's see how much Rendon and his $33 M per do for a team with zero pitching.

The Angels won 72 games last year. A healthy Ohtani and the addition of Rendon does not get them past the Astros and A's. Even if Adell is able to get up to the majors in June, that does not make up for one of the worst pitching staffs in baseball and probably the weakest farm system with regards to pitching. If I'm a free agent, I'm not thinking they are anywhere near going to the playoffs in 2020 as constructed.

Trout, Ohtani, Rendon and....a whole lot of mediocrity or worse. That's pretty much the definition of "top heavy".

Some of which they are paying elite money for in the form of Pujols and Upton.

That’s poses a different question than the comment that initiated this discussion.
