Default Updates on Past White Sox Players

This post hardly seemed to merit its own thread, but I thought maybe a more inclusive post on past players could take off. I.e., the Esteban Loaiza post could have gone here!

I live in Japan, and went to a Japanese spring training game yesterday between the Chunichi Dragons and the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters. Imagine my surprise when Dayan Viciedo stepped up to the plate as the clean-up hitter for the Dragons! He was playing 1B.

I figured I'd look him up, and learned that Dayan has played for the Dragons for two seasons and was selected to the Japanese All-Star game during his first year (2016) in the league. Pretty cool!

He did, however, exhibit some long, loopy, off-balance swings while going 0-2 in the game I watched yesterday. I had to laugh. But hey, he had at least one respectable season for the White Sox, so figured I'd update you all on his current situation!

Nice idea. Good to have an insider in Japan. I'd love to hear about players over there

Default Gordon Beckham

I saw our old friend Gordon Beckham starting 2B for Seattle yesterday against the Sox. Also saw him boot a ball in short rightfield. He didn't get to use his "strong arm of Beckham".

Did he trip over the pitching mound and drop an infield popup while calling everyone else off the play?

I agree. If I were a professional athlete, they'd have to drag me off the court/field and forcefully expel me from the building before I'd stop playing.

Getting over $.5M for the year. Took me a few years to get that, when I worked. I hope we don't have another "Beckham" on the club right now.

I thin we overthink how much that money means. It takes a lifetime of love and dedication to even reach the playing level that Beckham has exhibited at the MLB level. When you love what you do that much (and who wouldn't?) you want to do it as long as you possibly can.

I mean don't get me wrong the money is great but one would hope by now Beckham is set for life.

Another random sighting this afternoon. I was watching the Angels and Padres game briefly:

Rymer Liriano has latched on with the Halos. He had a cup of coffee with the Sox last year. I get him confused with Willy Garcia, who was injured in the collision with Moncada.

Only AB I saw of Liriano today, he got hit in the foot and had to leave the game.

With so many highly-touted prospects in the system now, there's bound to be another "Beckham" or two among them. What made the Beckham bust bad was that the farm system was so barren at the time that there wasn't much else in the way of talent to fall back on. That shouldn't be the case this time around.

Considering that Beckham was selected #8 overall in the draft and was touted as our next golden boy, it sure was disappointing to have him be a flop. On the bright side, at least we got Almonte for him who we then traded for Kahnle who was an important piece in the trade with the Yankees that brought over prospects Rutherford, Clarkin, and Polo. So, we may yet be able to salvage something from drafting Beckham a decade ago.

I'm heading to Japan next week (3/9) for two weeks. Will probably take in a game in Nagoya while I am there.

You needn't worry about Beckham's finances. Family is extremely wealthy. Doesn't need to get paid. Check out U of Georgia. Half the buildings have the Beckham name.
